Taking DHEA an Anti-Depressant

Posted by Anthony L on June 5, 2001, at 8:19:06

I am on an anti depressant called Cipramil. I want to come off of it but would like to start taking DHEA before i do so. Can anyone tell me if there is any problems with this?

I am not aware of any problem but I don't know for sure. A few years a go I tried DHEA for a short time. I remember feeling a little increase in energy. I don't remember an antidepressant effect. There are risks to consider with long term use.

I have been on Celexa (I believe it's just another name for Cipramil) for the past 14 months with very good results. But I never took both drugs together so I have no personal experience.

I would be interested in what experience you have with Cipramil and why you want to discontinue it.

> Hi Bill,

Wasn't the 7-Keto dhea version made to avoid
the side effects of dhea?? I know from
research it does not convert to hormones. I am
curious as to your thoughts.

Thanks,
Paige

I don't know. My knoweldege of DHEA is very limited. I think that I read however that one's blood levels should be taken before taking DHEA.

Anthony,

DHEA can be an effective AD for some, especially those with midlife onset of either depression or dysthymia which will have the prominant symptoms of lack of motivation and anhedonia.

That being said, DHEA converts into sex hormones and therefore excessive dosages can have unpleasent and even dangerous side effects. It is safe however if taken in the proper dosage.

The only way to tell what the proper dosage for you is (and whether you need to take it at all) is to get a blood test. Search my previous posts on this subject for details on taking and interpreting the blood tests (many doctors misinterpret the blood tests).

BTW: 7-keto is a wonderful and very safe analogue of DHEA that protects the hippocampus from damage due to excessive cortisol (common in depressives) and often increases ones sense of energy. However since it does not convert to sex hormones, it likely does not have the AD potential of DHEA.

What is 7-Keto and where do you get it? Am maxxed out on DHEA itself, via blood test.

Thanks,
Zo
