ADVICE please: Effexor or Serzone vs Zoloft?

Posted by Cateb on June 10, 2001, at 12:50:14

OK, my big Zoloft success story is still pretty good, but something very disappointing has happened now that I've eliminated the Wellbutrin to get rid of the anger, churning etc: I LOST MY SEX DRIVE COMPLETELY!

My doctor wants me to try Viagra, but I have debilitating migraines and I'm petrified of getting a migraine from it. So he thinks the two best options are those listed above.

I cannot take anything that will be activating because of the terrible side-effects that Wellbutrin had on me, and I am petrified of gaining back weight because of my history of eating disorders. I should mention I have very low blood pressure so I'm aware of the need to start Serzone incredibly slowly. I also need something that will help me manage impulse control, since I struggle with shopping and eating (not now, but historically) binges. And needless to say, I need to be able to have sex with my husband...who is a doll and has supported me through all this muck, mire and more.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. -- Cate

My deepest sympathy to you--I feel like I've gone through a whole pharmacy of antidepressants trying to find one that doesn't affect my libido. Serzone is one I haven't tried. I DO NOT recommend Effexor: first of all, it shut down my orgasmic capacity just as badly as SSRIs had done, and second, it is highly addictive and is almost impossible to stop taking. Check out other threads re Effexor withdrawal; there's a lot of information that you won't get from the package insert. (I stopped taking Effexor 2 weeks ago because of the sexual side effects--even after tapering off the dosage over about 6 weeks the withdrawal has been so bad that I've been pretty much bedridden for the last two weeks.)

Good luck; I hope you find something that works!

Thanks, Rosalinda. Yes, I remembered a lot of negative Effexor stuff that had been since packed into the archives, but the recent stuff that I read through before posting seemed largely positive. I'll do that search. Not too many post about Serzone it seems, as compared with Effexor. Good luck on your withdrawal and on finding a better solution, too!

Hi Cateb,

I think you responded to one of my posts before about anxiety and depression. (Thanks) I was on 500 mgs of Serzone, dropped to 400 and recently added 10 mgs of Prozac which seems to be working wonderfully. I too have had problems with binges (eating mainly, but shopping sometimes, too) The small amount of Prozac seems to keep me more in control of my behavior (though I haven't been diagnosed OCD) and the Serzone, for me, has no side effects at all, though by itself it wasn't doing the trick. Hope this helps -
