It took me a long time to get off valium. It's not easy. I didn't have headaches or muscle tension. I had REM flooding. I had so much REM sleep it was exhausting. I think it took about 3 months to get through and my pdoc had me on depakote. I tried tapering off without another med and it never worked. Valerian root helps take the edge off too if you can get past the smell(even the capsules stink) Try to go easy on yourself. In rehabs, you need more time to get off benzos than to get off heroin.

How long were you on 1/8 mg before you stopped taking the Klonopin? I've never been through benzo withdrawal but am told that the last little bit is the hardest part. You might have to decrease it even slower, eventually getting down to amounts that you can't measure precisely (like, a few shavings from a 0.5 mg pill).

You might try switching to Tranxene (clorazepate), a very long-acting benzo. Tapering off Tranxene would likely be easier. Another strategy that has sometimes helped people get off of benzos is to take an anticonvulsant like Neurontin, Depakote, or Tegretol.

I hope you're able to emerge from the withdrawal syndrome okay. Keep us posted as to how you're doing.

Elizabeth/Jodsteroo,

I have noticed that I can *swap* roughly .5mg of Klonopin with 125mg of Depakote or 100mg of Neurontin. It takes a few days... I am now down to .5mg (two half-tabs)of Klonopin daily, sleeping plenty/easily. I wonder also if Gabitril (at low doses-for those who can tolerate it) would also work??

karen thenks for your reply...i was wondering what too rem flooding feels like...ive heard of rem rebound syndrome after withdrawl from meds but am not that familiar with it...your use of the word "flooding" actually describes how my head kinda feels...it feels saturated with fluid....and im sleepy too...but cant fall into a deep sleep...and everything seemslike its spinning....anyway i was curious if you could describe more about your rem flooding and the symptomes of it? thanks....

I have been of of Clonazapam for one month after two years of use and have been going through withdrawl hell. The following is a list of my symptoms.

Light headed like floating. (severe at times)
Chest tightness.
Numbness over most of my body.
Jaw clenching.
Face flushing.
Anxiety.
weakness arms and legs.

Any of these sound familiar?? I feel for you. I have read that this can continue for a long time, up to a year or more.
