Scared of celexa

Posted by elderweissblue on May 27, 2001, at 9:34:46

Scared of celexa. Starting it this week. I heard it has side effects, that it can make you anxious. Can someone tell me their stories. I would appreciate positive comments.

I am new to this...but I do have a comment. My doctor tried me on Celexa and it made me extremely tired. I had been on Effexor XR--with NASTY side effects.. so he decided to try me on Celexa. Needless to say, I am back on Effexor Xr, hurdling the awful side effects, up to a 225 mg dose and feeling great! Really...it is trial and error. I wouldn't be scared. If it doesn't work, there is something out there that will. Just take it slow!

EWB - The anxiety caused by Celexa™ (citalopram) is a start-up side effect of the drug. As your body begins to adjust to the drug and the therapeutic action begins to kick in, the anxiety lessens to a point lower than what it originally was. This takes two to four weeks, depending on the ability of your body to adapt to the Celexa.

SSRIs, like Celexa, as used in panic disorder, but in most cases, the panic attacks increase before they begin to be controlled. Knowing that this anxiety will wane, and perhaps the judicious use of a low dose benzodiazepine if necessary, can help control this start-up side effect.

I hope that this is of some help. - Cam

Celexa is noted for have fewer side effects than most SSRIs - this might be becase it is weaker than most of them.

Most of the side effects don't last - they should be gone in 2 weeks - or you might not get them at all.

I wouldn't be scared of the side effects - The most important thing to know is you need to taper off most of these drugs - plan on it takein 2 - 4 weeks to stop the medicine.
