You Haven't Tried Everything:

Before you give up on medical treatment, there is hope for you in newer medications and newer combinations. I found relief in the MAOI Selegiline. Here are some more options that you may not have thought of:

Nefazodone - great for sleep; no sexual dysfunction; no anticholinergics side-effects.

Lamotrigine - good side-effect profile; most antidepressant properties of the anticonvulsants

Carbamazepine - less side effects than Lithium or divalproex sodium

Topiramate - the newest mood-stabilizer; it promotes weight loss

Desipramine - the least side-effects of all the Tricyclics; one of the SNRIs

High-dose Venlafaxine - at higher doses Venlafaxine affects more chemicals than SSRIs.

Buspirone - an effective antidepressant and anxiolytic at high doses.

Dopamine Agonists - Pramipexole has two studies on it (I took it).

"Power Combinations" - Remeron+Effexor; Wellbutrin+Remeron, Remeron + Prozac

Augmentation of anything you have tried before with Lithium, Pindolol, or Buspar (I take pindolol)

Foreign medications to the US: the RIMA Moclobemide; Reboxetine; Amisulpride, etc

Atypical Neuroleptics/Antipsychotics with antidepressant properties: Risperidone, Olanzapine, Seroquel, GEODON

Provigil - a stimulant that is possibly effective

Irreversable MAOIs - Phenelzine, Tranylcypromine. Extremely Effective.

MAOI-B - Selegiline, an antidepressant almost comparable to Phenelzine.

I hope that gives you hope!

How high? I am getting off remeron and have so much trouble with the SSRIs that we are trying buspar. I know it is slow to act. I am currently just starting and am only at 15mg a day in 3 divided doses.

I take 60mg It took about 10 days after starting that I felt anything. Even at 30 mg I found it pretty subtle. I'm a believer now--more in the anxiolytic effect in my case than AD

Menkes, D. B.. Buspirone Augmentation of Sertraline. British Journal of Psychiatry. 166(6):823-824, June 1995.

This case-study claims the use of 60-90 mg of buspirone is needed.
