Anyone Using Nortriptyline Hcl (Pamalor)?

Posted by Gene Lowery on February 8, 2001, at 15:14:21

I have been on Nortriptyline Hcl (Pamalor) for about six months. I have gained about 35 pounds in that time. I was wondering if I went on a strict diet followed by intense exercise could I lose the weight or does this drug keep the weight on no matter what you do?

How well does the Pamelor work for you?

I took it with Effexor and dropped it because it seemed like Effexor was helping and Pamalor wasn't. The side effects I didn't need either. Exercise is more important than dieting. Dieting without exercise depresses your metabolism so you have to reduce intake even more to lose weight.

As for dieting, my strategy is to minimize foods that result in sudden blood sugar surges followed by insulin release. I don't drink any soft drinks or beverages with corn syrup. I drink nearly a gallon of water a day, and maybe a glass of juice. I avoid refined flour products - white bread and pasta and limit sweets. Then the usual stuff like eat more fruit and veggies, less saturated fats and hydrogenated oils, leaner meats. Just making some of these substitutions will help.

Part of your weight gain is just water retention and goes quickly when you go off the drug.

I've taken Nortriptyline for over 2 years now. I also take Zyprexa which has even worse weight gain side effects. After about 4 - 6 months the weight gain stopped and I leveled off about 50 pounds heavier. Since then I have been able to lose weight with a low carb diet and daily trips to the gym. I know of a few others on AD's who have lost the weight after the initial gain.

The weight can come off but it will take a lot more time to get rid of it than it took to put it on.

Good Luck,
Chris

Before being diagnosed with bipolar 2, I was taking Pamalor and gained 30 pounds. Weight gain is very typical. I was medicine resistant. Although I had been diagnosed with major depression only and not bipolar 2, Pamaler was the only AD that gave me any relief at all. So if Pamalor is working at all you may want to stay with it. After my doctor retired I went to another doctor that explained that anyone that is medicine resistant should be evoluated again, that maybe there is a different diagnosis. With Bipolar 2, I was put on Topamax and have lost all the weight. I tried exercise while taking pamaler, but the battle of the sweet cravings were to much. The bottom line is if it working go with it, society puts to much focus on body image. Just be happy. :)
