Reboxetine + Effexor + Lithium + Neurontin?

Posted by mars on January 18, 2001, at 1:12:45

Hi babblers -

Any thoughts? I just acquired several bottles of reboxetine, still sealed, from a person who's tapered off of it after having been on for a long time.

I'm not in any hurry...still getting used to the gabapentin. It's just that what I've read about reboxetine and its possible effect on motivation definitely interests me.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

Hi,
I must admit it has been difficult to find anyone who has liked Reboxetine. The few that did like it later complained of a poop-out effect. I guess for a small group of people Rebox is a great drug, but I think the people who try it and don't like it far outweigh those who do like it. Its results in the real world don't seem nearly as promising as results in literature. At least, based on this board anyway.

I became much more depressed very fast when I tried it. Several other people here experienced the same thing. It was rather dramatic and scary.

If you want to try Rebox, I would suggest starting with a super low dose at first, like maybe 1mg or 2mg. Break or cut the pill to size. If all goes well, then you could increase dose. With most drugs I think it's important to start with a super low dose just to feel it out before diving in, but especially with Reboxetine. Who knows, it could end up being a miracle to you. My experience with it was not good, but we're all different. For increasing motivation via norepinephrine or dopamine enhancement, I strongly prefer the mild stimulant Adrafinil, the mild antipsychotic Amisulpride, or Zyprexa or Risperdal, or the old tricyclics like Desipramine or Nortriptyline. It's no secret, because I mention it all the time, but an almost perfect cocktail for lack of motivation is Adrafinil+Amisulpride.

Hi John -

Thanks so much for your reply. I've been lurking about here for awhile, so I'm aware what a fan you are of adrafinil + amisulpride. I have considered that combo as well, but was concerned about possible problems with taking amisulpride since I am a woman. (Well, at least the last time I checked.... :) I don't know much about bromoscriptine. But if I were to try the combination, how would my other meds work with that? Would I need to go off anything?

Even if I could find something to give me a nudge, that would help so much. I would really like to not live in bed for the rest of my life....

cheers,

mary

Hi Nikki -

I will certainly let you know how it goes. It seems too good an opportunity to try it since I've got two bottles of the stuff for free.

Good luck w/effexor withdrawal. I've done that before - this is the third time I've taken effexor. And good luck with the lithium - my stomach's really sensitive, so I take lithobid - I tolerate it really well, and can even take it on an empty stomach.

best,

mary

Hi Mary,
I don't think Amisulpride would cause any problems. The reason I say that is because the typical dose for depression, dysthymia, blahness, ranges from 25mg to 100mg a day. I take 33mg. At this low dose side effects are few, if any. The endocrine side effects would probably be an issue in the 300mg to 1200mg range. But at 100mg or less I doubt there would be any problem.

I've tried Bromocriptine and didn't like. A low dose actually made me more depressed quite fast. Not to mention lethargic, tired, weak-legged, and a tad nauseated. I was reading somewhere that Bromocriptine needs to be taken at high doses for depression. I felt so lousy on it so fast that I just said forget it.

Mary,

For me:
Reboxetine + Effexor = Insomnia
But everyone is different and this combo might work well for you.

Hey Mars...

well, I'm pretty sick, and pretty sure this isn't just effexor withdrawal. I was told to start to rebox. on 4mg, but my poor stomach can;'t handle anything right now - anything but water returns pretty quickly! I'm gonna actually NOT take anymore I think, as I feel so lousy. be careful with the rebox. is my advice so far!!! (Oh, anbd I took my first rebox. on wednesday morning)

Hi Ron -

Thanks for the post. I'm giving it a try since I am doing so badly right now. The neurontin is definitely having a sedative effect right now, so my second day of rebox has been full of often-sleepy tears. I definitely won't continue it if I encounter insomnia.

best,

mary

Hey Nikki -

Thanks for you post. I'm taking 2 mg of reboxetine; so far the second day (saturday) has been pretty much about crying. I'm pretty sick too, been going down for awhile, so I feel for you...good luck to both of us :)

Effexor withdrawal is really bad, though, and it sounds like you tapered off pretty quickly. This is my third time on Effexor, and the first time I didn't taper slowly enough. It was pretty awful.

Getting off the rebox sounds like the right thing for you to do. Let me know how you're doing, okay?

best,

mary

Did you say you'd been crying alot going onto rebox??? I can hardly stop! Everything on tv that the least bit touching has me in floods.. and then I got some sad family news today (my cousin lost her baby - but she was 7 months pregnant so it was real hard for her. They're having a little funeral on thursday for the little boy) and I've been crying and crying over it.

Poor husband can't understand whats wrong, as I'm not normally a tearful person!

Hey Nikki -

I cried so much yesterday, but it wasn't all bad - actually kind of catharctic. I'll see what happens today. I'm alone, though, nobody locally knows what's going on. I'm going to stick it out for a few more days to see what happens unless it becomes more than I can handle.

I think if you take care of your Effexor withdrawal (you really should talk to your pdoc again, maybe check into taking another med to help you get off the Effexor) and stay off the reboxetine you'll be okay.

Keep me posted, babe, on how you're doing.

Hi John,
I'm new to this BB - are you posting from England by any chance? I've never heard of either adrafinil or amisulpride, and like to think of myself as an educated consumer, so there goes that one all to hell! :-]
Anyway, are these both generic? or are there other
names for them? What class of drug are they?

Currently, I'm on 300 mg of Effexor XR per day, for about 3 months. Having very big motivational problems, can't do the work I'm supposed to do for two non-profits. On unemployment right now, and worried that when I find a job, won't have enough energy to do it. Feel like a failure... Switched to the Effexor after 4 years on Zoloft, increasing the dose over time, but it just blanked out on me, although the initial reaction was excellent.

Any advice about the A + A combination with the Effexor, if you have any experience or knowledge? Any suggestions about what to read about the Ad or Am? Many many thanks --

Ms B

hi nikki ~

what does your pdoc say? is it getting any less intense for you? 4 mg of reboxetine seems like a lot to start with - 2 mg is almost more than i can bear.

the tears are definitely coming in waves for me right now, instead of the full on downpour of two days ago. i weep at sad or poignant stories or sudden memories from the past, but it passes. at times i feel extremely vulnerable or fragile, but it doesn't last too long. i hope that the people you're around understand what's going on. right now my biggest difficulty is that i'm so isolated. i have a few friends, but i think i've been too needy in the past and am trying not to do that now.

keep me posted on how you are. what's going on with your effexor withdrawal?

best,

mary

Well, I took your advice andhave cut down to 2mg at the moment, and will build up lsowly to 8mg a day.

The tears seem to be worst between 11am and 4pm... and today everything has seemed like the end of the world, and I've taken it out terribly on my husband. Rough old day.

Pdoc - huh!! he says "this si to be expected when starting a new med"... great eh!!

but I'm pretty sure the effexor withdrawal is gone now, and I'm going to try going to work tomorrow and see what happens. The dizziness / nausea is easier now too, so going in the right direction!

Thanks for taking the time to reply though - it's meant alot.

Nikki xx
