DULOXETINE???

Posted by ksvt on January 10, 2001, at 14:51:16

I just read an article about ADs which referred to the drug duloxetine, supposedly made by Eli Lilly. I can't seem to get to any of my bookmarked drug sites, or those that I can get to don't have information about this drug. I've never heard of it. Does anyone know what its trade name is, and any other info? Thanks ksvt

Duloxetine is a combination norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake inhibitor (similar to Effexor in this regard). 5 years ago, it was planned that it undergo clinical trials. It then seemed to disappear. I don't know anything about what's going on with it now. It appeared to be a promising drug.

Where exactly did you here about it?

Try http://www.lilly.com/about/investor/99report/english/products1.html , in 1999 it was in phase I trial with expected release 2001. Effect like Effexor, hopefully less side effects.

> Scott - the newest issue of Time magazine features a huge section on the future of drugs. There is an article in this section about drugs to treat mental illnesses which talks about the chemical action of SSRIs. It refers to fluvoxamine (which I took for a time) and duloxetine as "competing SSRIs" which "affect the same biochemical pathways, only with greater precision and fewer side effects." As I think I mentioned before if you try to search it on the Eli Lilly home page you (or at least I) come up blank. ksvt

What is the brand name for duloxetine? Is it new? I wonder if I've had that one yet. Thanks in advance. :^)

Unless you participated in a study using experimental drugs, I doubt you would have tried it.

I know a few of the psychopharm researchers at Lilly. I can try to contact them to find out more about it. It may take some time, though.

To the best of my knowledge, that is correct. There is no marketted product. According to the URL James provided, duloxetine is only now being tested on a small number of both healthy and ill individuals (phase II) to establish whether it is safe and shows enough efficacy to advance to large scale clinical trials (phase III). In the mean time, superficially similar antidepressant combinations that produce combined serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibition. One can either try Effexor or combine an SSRI with desipramine or reboxetine (available in other countries). For me, I still have more faith in desipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant, than reboxetine. It is a proven product. If you believe yourself very treatment resistant, I read that Effexor and Remeron in combination is considered to be a "big-gun" combination. I would try it, except that Remeron didn't treat me very well the first time I tried it alone.

I think duloxetine is a drug to keep an eye on. I don't think it would be approved any sooner that two years from now. Perhaps someone else can comment on the length of time it takes to get a drug to market once phase III trials begin.
