Vivactil & Serzone (opinions please?)

Posted by CarolAnn on November 30, 1999, at 15:57:14

Have my Pdoc appt. next Tues. and am going to discuss the idea of switching from Wellbutrin to Vivactil. By then, it will be a full 8 wks of Wellbutrin(400mgs.per day), and no results, especially no energy yet! I would like to stay on the Serzone(225mgs/day), because I think I need the serotonin, but I am in such a fog of tiredness that I really don't think Wellbutrin is the thing, especially since I've had such atypical side effects(weight gain, no motivation). Any opinions would be appreciated. Also, I know that Vivactil is an activating tryciclic, but does anyone know where I could find documentation of it's effects, that I could take to my Psychiatrist to back up my request??Thanks very much!CarolAnn

CarolAnn:

Try the following site: medmatrix.org

Go to Psychiatry. Look for American Journal of Psychiatry PubMed Search. Type in Protryptyline (Vivactil). You should find some helpful info.

Good Luck

Blessings,

Hi CarolAnn.

Try http://www.mentalhealth.com/drug/p30-t06.html
This page has all the info on Vivactil, like how it's good for "apathetic withdrawn patients", and side effects of insomnia, etc.

Also try http://jupiter.felk.cvut.cz/FAQ/articles/a1393.html
This whole page is actually full of interesting stuff on depression and medications and stuff. But for comments on Vivactil, go all the way down near the bottom where an author is putting a plug in for Vivactil by stating how it is uncharacteristic of other TCAs, it is activating, it would be lot more popular if SSRIs hadn't been invented, etc. etc.

Other than that, maybe just try a search on Vivactil and see where it takes you. Unfortunately there's nothing in Dr Bob's tips on this one. You might stumble onto to something while browsing around though. Depression Central has lots of info. I didn't look there, but maybe a search with the words Vivactil + Ivan Goldberg, or Vivactil + Goldberg, or Vivactil + Depression Central maybe, might yield something. Hope this helps.

what i do know is that vivactil is the only drug that really helped my add, when on it i was able to motivate myself and focous on a task. 20-30 mg worked best, at 40mg i became anxious, confused, dehydrated, had trouble with blurred vision. hope it helps you, it worked well for me until i became immune to it a coulpe of years down the road. george

Carol Ann, I never tried Vivactil but really liked Serzone (it helped with depression and sleep and didn't interfere with sex). I'd still be taking it if it helped OCD too. The only strange thing to get used to for me was a period of emotional lability/mood swings (especially feeling angry for no reason) when I first started taking it, but that went away in about a week. Also some visual "trails" at night but they were harmless. Was taking 450 mg/day of Serzone.--Cindy

About one year ago my phy wanted me to wanted me to try Zoloft because vivactil is an 'orphan drug'(rarely used) so I agreed, it has been one of the worst years I have experienced. I gained back all the weight I had lost and had no motivation. I ask my phy to please prescribe vivactil for me and he did. I have been on it for 3 weeks and I'm doing great. Good Luck Everyone!

I was on Zoloft for a while but it didn't seem to help reduce my migraines. I tried a new doctor who put me on Vivactil and now I'm so dizzy I can't even do my housework. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Vivactil is all hype. It really doesn't stimulate
anyone, according to my experience, and what the doctor told me. I would say that Wellbutrin is 5 times as
stimulating as Vivactil. The truth is that there
is no tricyclic that does not make one tired.
