Does anyone know the difference between effexor and effexor xr? I know it stands for extended release, but what exactly does that mean? I haven't been able to sleep for more than 3 hours at a time. any advice etc out there? Thank you

The Effexor XR means you only have to take once a day because it has longer effect.

The other thing is that you take it in the morning so you can sleep at night!

I used to take my Effexor XR at night and could not fall asleep. Now I take it in the morning and at night I fall asleep NO problem.

Hope this helped.

I started on Effexor XR, but I accidentally got the regular Effexor prescribed this last month. The only difference that I could tell was that I get a mild stomach upset on the regular that I didn't have on the XR and I have to remember to take the regular in a split dose because it doesn't last as long.

I also had insomnia REALLY bad for the first six weeks even though I was taking Trazadone at bedtime. (I only slept 3-4 hours a night) I still can't fall asleep without the Trazadone, but I now sleep for 6-7 hours with a one-hour nap most days.

Hang in there if it's working for you. I have gotten COMPLETE relief of both my depression and my perfectionism (Which, by the way, wasn't a problem for me...just everyone I lived with!!!!) without any of that expensive, time-wasting, chit-chat about my childhood business. If Effexor isn't the answer for you, keep trying meds. There IS an answer out there, and you won't believe how different it's going to be!!!!!!

Good-luck in your search.
