Recurrent throat infections on Remeron?

Posted by caroline on April 5, 2000, at 14:44:10

Has anyone taking Remeron experienced recurrent throat infections? I've heard that this can sometimes happen.

Caroline,
I've been taking Remeron for over a year and never had a throat infection, are you taking any other meds in combo with it?

Regards,
Greg

Greg, I am on zopiclone (hypnotic) as well, but I've been on it for ten years now and never had a problem with throat infections before.
P.S. thanks for taking the time to reply.

Caroline,
From what I've read, certain people on Remeron appear to develop a reduced resistence to sores and infection, especially involving the mouth and throat. Although it isn't necessarily serious, it would probably be a good idea to speak with your doctor about it (who may ask you to get a white blood-cell test to make sure that things are basically OK).
Best,
JD

I've tried several SSRI's to find which one works for me. Each time I switch SSRI's or change dosage, I get a mild sore throat. I get a low fever and muscle pains. Fortunately, it only lasts a day or two. I also have another strange reaction. I broke my leg a year ago. I had two operations to put different hardware in my leg. Each time they had to cut my leg from my knee to my hip all the way to the bone. I healed up fairly well now, but when I get those flu like muscle aches from the meds, the pain becomes almost unbearable in the muscle of the damaged leg. That too only lasts a day or two. I hope your sore throat symtoms will go away like mine did.

Dear all

Thanks for your replies and reassurance. It has been going on for some time now, so I might do as suggested and pay a visit to the doctor's for a blood count. Again, many thanks.

David

I hope your leg is feeling OK at the moment. My sore throat's were an inconvenience at first, but I've actually kind of got used to them now. They don't often hurt too much, I just get white nodules!

An uncommon side effect of taking AD's is a reduction in white blood cells. It may be a good idea to have that checked out if you haven't already.

I hope the sore throats and muscle pain are not recurring. Right now I'm going from Celexa to Effexor. The info in the Effexor box states the possibility of infections. If the symtoms reoccur even after I have found a stable dosage of Effexor, I might have to consider drooping the meds. At this point, my leg usually feels fine, but when one of those muscle ache attacts happen, WOW, it hurts.

Anyone on Remeron MUST monitor their white blood cell count (blood test every 6 mths as a suggestion). A rare side effect of remeron is to decrease the number of your white blood cells, which are what your body uses to fight infections. That could be the cause of the throat infections.
