Klonopin is a double edged sword. Does what it's designed to do but gives me major short-term memory problems and increases depression in the long run. Like everything else you'll have to try it and see what you think.

>I've been on klonipin for three years now, for anxiety. It does calm, but I've found that it isn't, or at least doesn't seem, to be very strong, in that I still sometimes experience anxiety. One interesting warning: I tried going off of it, because of the lethargy it caused me (not extreme, but, I was getting to work late). I withdrew in what I thought was a gradual manner, over a period of 8 wks., and, after having been off of it for five days, had a grand mal siezure, even though I'd never had a siezure before in my life. Careful.

>Joan, I have manic depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Somtimes my anxiety is so bad that I am completely dyfunctional. I have been taking klonopin on an as needed basis along with other med. It has worked really well for me. Keep in mind that everyone is individual and that what works for one may not work for another. Your best bet is to talk with your doc and then decide with him or her if its something that you want to try. I did alot of reading about all the med I went on before I took any of them. Educate yourself about all the side effects ahead of time so that you are prepared. These babbles are okay but your own body is the true test. Again, do your own research so you know exactly what you are taking. There is alot of info on the internet for you to access about all the meds. Good Luck. Ellen

I thought Klonopin was good because it did seem to
help a lot with anxiety but I feel strongly that it made
me more depressed.

I had to go off it and it took 5 months to feel well
I had the most horrible withdrawal symptoms imaginable

Hello,

Can you suggest a really slow, safe taper for
Klonopin? I have been taking 0.75 mg for 10 years.

Thank you.

Irene

I've been taking Klonopin, 2mg per day, for 5 yrs.
Recently the doc doubled my dosage to 4mg per day.

Last year my script ran out & I was without it for
about a week. I had terrible headaches during that
time. After resuming taking it the headaches ceased
immediately.

Can't offer advice on tapering off. Just don't do
it cold turkey.

How will I ever get off my current dosage of 4mg
a day? Don't know but I'm not worrying about it
right now.

Irene, do you need to go off of it, or is this a "just in case" scenario? (just curious)

Given the size of the tablets, you don't have very far to go to get off of it, but the length of time you've been on it mya very well have some effect, I imagine. Seems to me that stepping down 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg for a week, then down to 0.25 mg for a second week would be a good start. If you're feeling fine with that, then try taking 0.25 mg every other day for a week. I don't know if there's much of a point in breaking a 0.5mg tablet into quarters instead of the every-other-day route. After that, you'll have been reducing your dosage steadily for three weeks -- you might want to see if you can stop right then, or you may want to take 0.25mg as needed if you can maintain at least that every-other-day regimen.

just a thought,
bob

I just read for the second time that two people had seizures, one person a grandmaul. This is when they are tapering off. This concerns me because everyone seems to have a difficult withdrawal. Amanda

Amanda - Clonazepam can cause seizures, but usually in people who are susceptible to them. Questions you have to ask yourself are: 1) "What other drugs are they taking (legal & illegal)?" (Many drugs like the oldtime antipsychotics - Chlopromazine, Mellaril, etc. - lower seizure threshold. If one is taking these and Clonazepam, yes a seizure is possible). 2) "Were these people genetically prone to seizures?" (Is there a history of seizures in the family). 3) "How fast did they drop the Clonazepam dose?" (If stopped cold turkey, yes, Clonazepam can cause seizures, but this is not common).

Please see my post above regarding other concerns - Cam W.
