Anyone else feel like this?

Posted by scared and alone on February 15, 2000, at 10:08:57

It's the feeling I used to get before the dentist, sitting outside the principles office at school, before an exam.
Like something is being squeezed right in the middle of my abdomen-between my lower ribs and then several times a day it spreads through my chest and makes a lump in my throat and heart burn.
My doctor says I'm depressed but I've been depressed before and I never had this "scared" feeling. I have it all the time, even with no worries in my life and I just want it to stop because feeling scared scares me.

I feel so tired most of the time but if I sit down or try to sleep I have to get up and move because I notice the scared feeling more when I am still.

Any answers appreciated.
Thanks

Scared,

What meds are you taking now? How long has this been going on? Jack Dreyfus author of the book, "A Remarkable Medicine Has Been Overlooked", speaks of his experience with crippling fear and intense anxiety, that was cured overnight by an antiepileptic drug called Dilantin. A small dose daily proved to completely cure this man's depression. I take it know and must say that all of my symptoms of anxiety that I previously had have disapeared. If you are interested I have some study abstracts done on the med. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Sounds like you have anxiety rather than depression.
Maybe you ought to take some meds aimed at that
rather than an anti-depressant...(?)

Are you seeing a general practitioner or a psychiatrist? I'd recommend a good pdoc or psychopharmacologist.
I know exactly how you feel and it is very treatable.

Brandon, feeling scared for no reason is a common symptom of clinical depression. Your problem is not anxiety it is clinical depression. Get on some antidepressants soon.

Boy, have I been where you have been. The end of 1989 and first part of 1990. Would wake up during the night feeling so anxious and scared that something was wrong with me. I lost alot of weight and was very tired all of the time. I had psychosomatic illnesses. My stomach was in a knot all the time. Felt like I was in a cloud for so long. One day after Christmas my father-in-law who is a doctor, put me on prozac. 2 months later I was seeing clearer than I have ever seen. The beauty of the world became clear and I couldn't believe I could feel this good. Prozac brought me out of my depression. I never felt like committing suicide, but just felt so awful I just wanted to die. I do not take prozac anymore, but I take a mood stabilizer for bi-polar. Just was diagnosed with that last year. Most people who are bipolar also take prozac or any other anti-depressant. There is hope for you. All you need to do is find the right doctor, a psychiatrist, who can give you the best treatment. One other thing, I believe that you have alot of anxiety just as I did and yes I still do, but at least the depression went away and the anxiety is at the low end. Good Luck

It could be anxiety and it could be anxiety with depression. It is too hard to tell from what you have told us.

It doesn't matter that much which diagnosis you have, except that being up front about any and all of the symptoms that bother you would help a doctor figure out a medication that might help you. Often, the same medications can help for depression and/or anxiety.

I agree that you should see a psychopharmacologist.

Sounds like panic attacks to me. I would occasionally get one and the unspecified fear was crippling but it only lasted a few minutes. Last year though, I had a full blown panic attack that lasted for 5 days. I didn't recognize what it was because I had never had all the symtoms at once. I thought I was going to die. I felt like I was choking constantly and that my throat was swollen shut. I felt like I had the flu. I couldn't sleep because I was so afraid. Finally my brother (MD) came to visit and figured out what was wrong. One Xanax pill and I was feeling so much better. I took them for a few days and the panic stopped totally. Ask a doctor if this is what it is in your case.

I feel like this quite often. It used to become a panic attack, but that doesn't happen much any more. I don't know if it's meds or what, but It's not as bad as it used to be. I didn't read any of the other responses to this so I'm sorry if I repeat anything. I'm pretty sure this is called generalized anxiety, if I understand it. There's nothing specific I can think of at the time to be anxious about, but I can't sit still and have to keep myself inundated with sensory stimuli to take my mind off of the anxiety...some medications help, but the only one I know of that isn't (supposedly) addictive is buspar.
hope this helps...

HI . You do sound anxious, but those symptoms are
close enough to my own cardiac symptoms that I
hope you get checked out by a cardiologist e.g., stress-thallium test, followed (if indicated) by angiogram.
Of course, the anxiety seeems primary, but the
nature of the pain and the fatigue mirror my own symptoms too closely for me to ignore.
Harold
