Parnate 240 mg/day!?

Posted by questioner on December 25, 1999, at 8:59:02

A friend is hospitalized from an overdose of Seroquel and Parnate. He took way more than the prescribed dose of Seroquel, but here I am concerned that his prescription for Parnate is for 6 tablets 4 times/day = 240 mg/day. From what I've read this is 8x the recommended maximum. Drug information includes the statement that doses greater than 30mg/day are "unlikey to be beneficial".

Is my friend's doctor way out of line on this?

If, in fact, 240 mg of Parnate in addition to Seroquel is what was prescribed, your friend should indeed consult another doctor. Quickly.

240 mg is a high dose, however, going over 60 is a very common practice. The statement that taking over 30mg/day will "unlikely be beneficial", I feel is nonsense. I take between 50 and 60 a day and feel much better than I did on 30. It sounds like you got your info off the Internet Mental Health website (excellent one by the way). The combo with Seroquel I will confess my ignorance on. I do not know if it would be such a wise thing to do with a parnate dose already at 240. If you go back and search, there is a string about a month ago that deals with parnate dosing.

You said your friend was admitted to the hospital. What were some of the symptoms? The only reason I ask is that from what I have learned from this site is that the chance of MAOI hypertensive episodes increase with dose. Just a thought. I hope all works out, many holiday blessings,
