I was misdiagnosed and prescribed Zyprexa for a bad drug experience that brought out terrible social anxiety. My doc prescribed Zyprexa because apparently it is given to people with bad drug trips, who have problems and hallucinations afterwards, to restore normalcy. Obviously misdiagnosed, Zyprexa did nothing good fro me, possibly even made things worse. I can't remeber the exact dosage. It caused terrible weight gain which I still havent been able to take off. Ironically, I was misdiagnosed again by the same doctor after another bad drug trip, and was put on another antipsychotic, Risperdol. This caused no weight gain, but it had other side effects such as restlessness and body stiffness (there are medical terms for these, I just can't remember). So, basically I got no benefits from Zyprexa because I don't have any of the schizophrenic symptoms. But I can say that it had unbearable side effects for me. Good luck.

Rubin,

I started taking Zyprexa as an aumentation to my Nortriptyline. I have a history of suicide attempts and was getting suicidal thoughts again pretty strongly. Within a week of starting the Zyprexa the urges had subsided. I would say that it really helped with what I would call Impulesive Thoughts.

Since then I have added Celexa and Naltrexone to the cocktail so I really couldn't tell you which med has been responsible for my extra 35 pounds. I still suffer from anhedonia but it's a lot better place than I was before.

BTW, I currently take 7.5mg of Zyprexa at night and sleep fairly well.

Hope this helps, e-mail me if you have other questions,

Chris

I have been taking Zyprexa for 18 months and it has worked out well for me. I am bipolar, not psychotic. Since I was also taking Depakote when I first began Zyprexa, it's hard to know which drug caused me to gain 30 lbs. I think the Depakote was more likely the cause of my weight gain. I began at 2.5 mg and then increased it to 5 mg within the past year. I didn't want to take it at first because I thought it was just for schizophrenics. My doctor straightened me out about that not being true. I can't think of any negative side effects I've had. Zyprexa
makes me sleep deeply and longer than I did previously. I used to sleep about 7 hours a night and now 9 hours is about the norm. Overall, I'd say that it has calmed me. It's hard to say what it does specifically because I also take Lamictal, Wellbutrin, Celexa and Klonopin. Combining these meds makes it difficult to know which one does what anymore.

Rubin,
Sorry, dont know what happened to the rest of my post above, must have pressed the wrong key somewhere. Anyway, my Mum is taking Olanzapine/Zyprexa and she has had some side-effects. However her dose initially was 27.5mg and she had just been switched from high dose Risperidone. Mum is now on 7.5mg, and she still has some effects (which are subsiding). The most obvious are some rigidity/spasms in her shoulders (kind of like if you draw your breath in really fast and lift your shoulders at the same time) These are involuntary. No headaches (so Mum tells me) although she feels as though her mouth is always dry and she is always eating a lozenge or mint or something similar to stop that dry throat feeling.

Rubin, Mum has been on anti-psychotics for many years, at high doses so perhaps this info is not relevant to your query re: your son. Mum also has permanent (I think) tardive dyskenesia - her legs are always moving, although when she is asleep she is still, I always wonder why that is. The leg shaking has been with Mum for as long as I can remember.

Hope things turn out well for your son - there are lots of people at babble who know a lot more than I do, so perhaps others can chip in with more information which may help your quest.

Deb. (hope this one works)
