Hi Daphne! If you do find this group please post the info, I would love to join something like this, since I am a housewife with ADD(and depression).

CarolAnn, for whatever it's worth, check with about.com and search in their chat database. I did find one on pharmacololgy last night, but I was obviously the only one there. Kind of like talking to yourself in trafic. Best Holiday Wishes and many Blessings,

There is an excellent message board for adults with ADD - and rhis is adults only - monitored very closely with careful scrutiny of all messages - which I have found very helpful - to access the list go to www.maillist.net/aadd.html or write to byxbe@workbench.net.

As a newly diagnosed adult, I have found it invaluable. Good luck. And if you have any trouble finding it, I got the original link through ADD on AOL. Another very good site. The more education the better!

You are welcome! There are so many links for information for adult ADD and I have put them together in my favorites or bookmarks - if you would like to have them I am happy to get them to you - you know the more we know the better we are - we may not be able to change anything with the knowledge except how we feel about ourselves and that is worth every word that is written - so if you are newly diagnosed as I am (at age 51), hang in there!

Barbara: I'd love the links. Some of the chat rooms are so fast it's impossible to keep up. I ended up on one the other day where I think most of the people were manic, I could'nt read and or type fast enough - not to make matters worse, I was feeding a 6 month old and typing one handed.

Any chat rooms that you know of that deal with pharmacology, if not, several of us could start one. This site is my first place to visit, but after I've exhausted the new post, a chat room would be nice. Some places will let you establish your own. Yahoo might be one, I'll make a mental note to check into it (mental note-dangerous thing-I'll make a list for the grocery store and leave it in the car, provided I can find the car when I search the parking lot, acting like I know where I'm going, later to realize that I drove the other car, the male ego is a bad thing).

Your thoughts? Blessings

I brought up the subject of starting a chat room among people on this site, but no one seemed interested. I am an internet novice, so have no idea how to do something like that, but if it happens, please, please, let me know! I would love to have the opportunity of actually getting to "talk" to any of psycho-babble's regulars. It would be nice to be more acquainted with any of you who are interested in this type of thing. Thanx!CarolAnn

Yo Dr. Bob, what about this... forming chat room

I know there are existing chat room for ADD. (I have't read this thread though except this post.) But there are free cgi scripts for chat rooms but that would take Dr. Bob's help to set it up.

From scratch alternatives would include using aol instant messenger, ICQ, PowWow or similar. (However, AOL has blocked all but its own chatware.) Tere are also Java Chat Setups, but I've never been happy with them -- they demand so much of a PC's system resources.

The other alternative is to use another web site that includes real time chat features, such as yahoo clubs, or excite, or delphi...

I'm procrastinating finishing a design project right now. Maybe I can QUICKLY look up some of the existing ones.

But if Dr. Bob has the bandwidth and is willing to give it a try, I'd be willing to help get it going (find the cgi code, design the layout, or whatever.) Come on Dr. Bob, its worth a try isn't it?

PS, CarolAnn -- I was thinking about you and hope you're feeling better. Let us know how things are going. Depression really sucks!

Zeke, thanx for the great chat room info, I'm going to check a few of those out. But, I still would love to have some opportunities to "chat" with the people I have come to know here at psycho-babble. So, if *anyone*(Dr.Bob?) can facilitate this, I hope there are enough of us interested to make it a worthwhile project.

Also Zeke, thank you for your concern! I am doing a bit better since the Serzone cleared out of my system. And I have found Adderall to be quite effective with motivation and some increase in energy. This effectiveness and my research have me pretty well convinced that all this time, a large part of my problem has been undiagnosed ADD! CarolAnn

Great links Zeke! I also agree with CarolAnn in that it would be nice to follow some of the folks we have come to know well from this site. Also, for what it is worth, if this chat option does occur here, it would be nice to be an "anytime" chat and not locked into a specific time. Best wishes and blessings to all!

Hi CarolAnn,

It would be great to have a place to go on the net to have 'real-time' chats with other babblers. It is a very natural progression to want to take friendships formed on this site to a different level, I know I have been guilty of rambling on a bit in my posts, perhaps annoying some other babblers (remembering the weary posts from a while back.)
I guess people from similar time zones could arrange to meet at particular chat rooms as mentioned above by Zeke...anyway I know this is more work for the lovely Dr Bob, but it would be a great way to communicate if it were possible to set up some sort of 'chat-babble' site.

All the best everyone,
Deb.

I have mixed feelings about a chat room. The chat rooms I have been in in the past(it has been a couple of years) felt a bit overstimulating. So much talking at once, very hard to keep up, it felt like shouting accross a crowded room while a zillion conversations were all going on at the same time.
And, I love the format of this board because it lends itself to complete sentences and more thoughtful expression. One can ramble on and not worry about monopolizing, because you know people have the option to read, skim, or skip.

OTOH, I have started coming here so frequently, desparately craving those little yellow tags, only to be disappointed because I am checking in too frequently. Sometimes I feel lonely and want to see other people here. Occassionally, if I hit the refresh button and see a new message posted while I am on the board, I feel really connected, and just wish I could connect more directly.

BTW, I have been thinking about the volume of traffic on this board. I have been hoping it won't grow TOO big, because it would lose some of its intimacy.

Chat rooms can move at a very fast pace. Half the fun is just watching the dialoge between others and if you feel the need to, jump in with a question or two. My main focus on the chat room interest is not to take away any participation in this forum whatsoever. If that were the case, I'd can the chat idea. Blessings,

If you want to chat about ADD, you can go to about.com and register to use the ADD site and there are message boards and chats - but remember - chats are fast paced - and some of us with ADD cant keep up - maybe its the age and not the ADD LOL!! - but its easier to blame ADD - and besides About.com has one of the best ADD sites on the web with Bob Seay as the host - he is very open - candid - honest about the effect of ADD on his life - just another suggestion.

I have to say I'm kind of ambivalent about chat rooms. For one thing, they really depend on other people happening to be there at the same time.

What about designating one elsewhere, trying that, and seeing how it goes? There's no point to reinventing the wheel. (Although this site is a reinvented wheel itself...)

Dr. Bob: Thanks for the input. Yahoo has a set up called "yahoo clubs", one of which is on "drugs for depression". These clubs also have chat rooms. This club/chat has very little participation. I've posted a couple of your links, specifically p.babble. As I've said before, the last thing I want to do is decrease the traffic on this site. It is unique and if anything, I would prefer to keep the questions rolling here. I just thought that a chat room link on this page for posters who might be on line at the same time could communicate quicker, particularly, ie. before a dr visit. I fully respect your decision and thanks for doing such a great job in helping so many people. Kindest regards and also, Holiday Blessings,

For those who really, really want to do the chat group tango (which does not include me) you can set up a free discussion area on e-groups.com which you can set up to screen and block extremely obnoxious folks (ie. trolls -- which is a problem on the U. of Massachuetts site) do polls and all sorts of other features...One of you only need take the initiative to set it up and then let others know...

ICQ For ADD Chat Room?

Posted by Barbara on December 22, 1999, at 10:55:37

In reply to Re: forming chat room, posted by dj on December 21, 1999, at 15:58:24

If you only want a message board for ADD, (Dr. Bob, dont shoot me!) this is pretty good here but I bet you need to at least mention one drug per message to stay legal (LOL!!!)! ICQ is also very good and we could have chats with multiple participants - its a piece of cake to down load even if you do have ADD. I would be willing to exchange my ICQ number with other ADDers if that would facilitate some dialogue. We ADDers need to stick tight to each other so we dont get lost!

Barbara, since I have only recently been diagnosed ADD, I am very interested in chatting with others. Unfortunately, right know I have limited computer access(visiting father-in-law in guest/computer room), and I will be away from home the last few weeks of January. Anyway, if you do end up getting some chats going, please don't forget me, and please, please, post the info here at psycho-babble, around the 30th or 31st of January, so I can catch up with you. Thanks, and best wishes for the holidays!CarolAnn
