Nardil dosage

Posted by Mark on December 18, 1999, at 15:56:56

I just started Nardil today. I'm pretty much self-medicating myself for the time-being; what is the most common dosage used, and what is the maximum. I started off with 15 mg, and I'm not sure how quickly I should go up and how far I should go up in dosage. Also, does anyone know if it is OK to eat Macaroni and cheese on MAOIs (the kind in a box, like Kraft).

Mark,

I'm wondering why the doctor who prescribed Nardil for you didn't provide dosage instructions, but when I've taken Nardil (I've been on it several times), I take 15 mg per day for three days, 30 mg for three days, and then I go to 45 mg/day, which is my theraputic dose. (Some people need 60 mg to be theraputic, but I'd advise you to stay put at 45 for a week or so and see what happens). If it works for you as it does for me, you should start to feel something positive by the end of the second week. It's one of the fastest acting AD's out there, if it's going to work for you.

About Kraft Mac & Cheese, I don't eat it when on the MAOI diet. It's cheddar, and that's supposedly a no-no. I've had it drummed into my head that only American cheese is okay. But others may tell you different.

Good luck, Mark. Hope you feel as great as I did on Nardil!

Judy

Thanks, Judy. One more thing: what about the weight gain (or any side effects, for that matter)?

I haven't been able to respond to your thread with the current technical difficulties. Going to give it another try.

Okay, Mark, I wasn't going to bring up that topic, but since you asked, yes - I did gain weight while taking Nardil, mostly due to undeniable (for me, anyway) cravings for sweets and carbohydrates.

That doesn't mean you will. Some people don't, and I've even heard of a couple of people losing weight on Nardil.

You're already taking it - it's a done deal. Don't worry about what side effects might or might not happen. Just let it work for you if it's going to. IF you start to experience side effects, you'll always find someone here who's "been there" and can give you advice.

Good luck. Nardil is the best drug I've ever taken and if I hadn't had to stop for medical reasons, I'd probably be taking it right now. Judy

Judy, What kind of medical reasons made you have to stop Nardil (if you don't mind sharing)? I'm only on Day 3, and I've already noticed improvement, I hope it just keeps getting better.

That's great! Sounds like it's doing what it should! You might find you'll start having trouble sleeping soon. (You might not miss the sleep either - Nardil gives you incredible energy when it works). I took Xanax to get to sleep at night. Worked great.

I had to stop taking Nardil because I began developing serious edema. First my ankles started swelling, then my face, and then it became so widespread that my doctor pulled me off of it. I think the edema is my personal problem though - haven't heard anything about it being a common side effect.

I am curious: "self-medicating"?

I'm currently taking Nardil. The dose I'm at now is 30mg. per day. My doctor may increase it to 45mg. This is an excellent AD. I have tried virtually all the others and nardil has worked best for me. The only side effects are sleep disturbance(which can be controlled) and weight gain. Good Luck to you!!!!
