I haven't been to psycho-babble in a few weeks, do to my depression took over big time. My Dr. wants me in the hospital again but i told him i couldn't go. So he wants me to go on Zyprexa 5mg. Is anyone taking this or have in the past? I take prozac 30mg already,

Zyprexa isn't an antidepressant. Did your doctor give you a reason for why he wanted you to take it? I wonder why he didn't start you at 2.5 mg instead of 5 mg. It's usually better to start at a lower dose and then increase it. I'm bipolar (not psychotic) and I now take 5 mg at night, although I started at the 2.5 mg dose. I was kind of resistant to take it at first, but it has worked out well for me. That first summer I was on it, I slept so soundly that I didn't even hear lawn mowers outside my window. I'm now on 5 mg a night and I can even take it 6 hours before I go to bed without it making me sleepy. When you first start taking it, you might sleep a lot (like 10 or 11 hours) and your sleep is much deeper. It seems to have calmed me down compared to how I was previously. Try it and see for yourself.

Kelly,

I'm glad that you came back. You really sounded down the last time you were here. I take 7.5 mg of Zyprexa at night. It really helped with my suicidal ideations. My moods are more controlable since I started it. I hope it helps you.

Sounds like good advice to start at a low dose and gradually titrate up. That is what I do with all the meds I have been on, having learned from experience early on that I react badly to meds when I start at a dose too high for me, even if it is the manufacturer's recommended starting dose.
Also sounds like zyprexa has helped you guys with agitation/suicidality. Glad to know there is something helpful. Other than the initial sleepiness, any other adverse effects at these doses (5 and 7.5 mg)?

He started me on a high does cause I'm not sleeping at all & suicidal. I was taking doxepin 75mg then when that wasn't working anymore, he put me on phenothiazine when all that did was give me more anxiety. I'll try taking Zyprexa tonight.

Kelly,

Glad to hear that the Zyprexa is working out. I've been on it for quite awhile and feel that it is one of the meds that has helped me the most.
