Autumn:

There are several drugs for rage. Lithium is used as well as Inderal. These two stand out from the literature that I have read in the past. If I am correct, some of the TCA's and possibly the ssri's might apply. I currently take Lithium and it did wonders for my little fits of rage (do not know what yours are like) which seemed to come out of nowhere. I'm sure others will have suggestions to ad to these. Best of luck and many Blessings,

These are good suggestions (not sure about tricyclics but definitely SSRIs). I think MAOIs would work as well. Some people find atypical antipsychotics (Zyprexa, Risperdal) or anticonvulsants (Depakote, Tegretol, Lamictal) to work as well. If you have ADHD-type frustration intolerance, stimulants (Ritalin etc.) could help.

'Luck.

The above is coming from someone who does not even believe irritability is a part of major depression. Elizabeth, the frontline drugs for rage, anger and irritability are ANTIDEPRESSANTS... got it? The anti-psychotics may take care of your rage but at the same time take away your personality as well, plus it is a good bet where there is rage there is depression or mania of some sort, therefore antidepressants are probably best with anti-convulsants being used when the rage is from mania. Leave the anti-psychotics for the patients who have let there rage get to the point where they have physically done something or are in max security prisons, involuntarily committed and other such extreme scenarios.

In most cases of rage that are not mania related, it is a real good bet that practically ANY antidepressant will relieve rage so long as that antidepressant is working well to begin with. Probably serotonin acting antidepressants would work the best as serotonin has a calming effect on many.

Basically it comes down to this for rage and anger:

If the rage/anger are from depression or anxiety, PTSD, etc. the best bet is serotonin acting antidepressants

If the rage/anger is from mania then obviously mood stabilizers are needed.

If the patient is obviously psychotic, then use anti-psychotics.

Go back and relearn the basics Elizabeth.

Refractory,

After research done on my part, why would Inderal be written so often for rage, if in fact rage could be treated with an antidepressant, ssri, mood stabilizer? I agree that rage will coexist with various types of depression and psychotic situations and that rage could be treated with a specific drug for that condition. What about patients who have a problem with rage, but are not diagnosed with depression or a psychotic illness? This is only a question, since I am only trying to understand your train of thought. Also, I do not want this thread to turn into a battle, which will accomplish nothing at all. You do seem to have a decent knowledge of information, so maybe you could help me see where you are coming from. Thanks and Blessings,

S. Suggs

Please chill out, refractory. This place offers lots of info and comfort for lots of people because everyone here acts like an adult and makes an effort to be civil toward one another.
Please, join us in making an effort to treat each other kindly.

Indeed, "refractory" is a person who has a lot of trouble with rage and has been unable to find a solution to this problem. He apparently has this (mistaken) idea that I don't think depressed people can be irritable (though he's beyond simply irritable; I think he's angry at the entire world) because I suggested or implied at some point that he might benefit from an antiepileptic or antipsychotic drug (having failed to respond to a number of antidepressants). I still think he should open his mind.

Eric, it would be a *good thing* if antipsychotics took away your personality. They might replace it with something a bit more palatable.

There's very little evidence to support the use of tricyclic antidepressants other than clomipramine in the treatment of "rage." Certainly they are not a first choice.

I find that my fits of rage relate more to anxiety than depression, although it is sometimes hard to tell the difference. Just added 30 mg buspar to 450 mg serzone, hoping it will make the difference.

I *do* know how annoying it is to get these fits and almost powelessly witness myself acting like... I don't know what, like it wasn't me. If there is anything I can do to get that one thing to go away, I will.
