Celexa questions

Posted by Frank on December 9, 1999, at 13:05:48

I have major depression and panic disorder. My doc. started me on zoloft, which I had to stop cuz the sexual side effects were terrible. I then went on to Remeron, which I stopped immediatly cuz I lost all consentration and was drowsy and out of it all day. Then I started Welbutrin about 3 weeks ago and I haven't really noticed any change, so on top of welbutrin my doc. has me on celexa.(and Klonopin for insomnia and during the day anxiety). I was wondering about the side effects and duration of side effects of celexa and the effectiveness of it. Any info. would be much appreciated. thanx in advance. =)

I think side effects may vary quite a bit from person to person.
I personally found the side effects of celexa quite mild EXCEPT
for the complete inability to achieve orgasm.

I started Celexa when I was hospitalized in January. Two other
patients who were started on Celexa while I was there found it
had adverse reactions; one became manic and the other found it
too sedating and nauseating. Two different people, two different
responses.

Did the anorgasma last the duration of the time on the medicine? Are you still on it? Sorry to be pesty, but I'm only 19 and I would hate to not have a sex life.

Frank,
I tried 3 ssri's (paxil, celexa, and luvox).
Once in my system all caused total anorgasmia.
I am taking Serzone now with no sexual side effects.

Hey. You're not being pesty. :)

I experienced anorgasmia within as few as two days after starting the drug, which continued unchanged for as long as
I stayed on it (a little over a month).

The combination you are trying (Celexa + Welbutrin) has been shown in many instances to help with SSRI-induced anorgasmia.
I'm probably a bad example, because none of the antidotes I have tried have been helpful, while others have experienced
great success with either combination therapies, or even waiting a while for the sexual side-effects to spontaneously
remit.

You're not alone with this problem. And yes, it is an unfortunate thing to deal with, especially as young as you are.
There are a number of things you can try, and usually people find something that works and minimizes this side-effect.

Thanks for all your help.....hopefully this welbutrin and celexa combo. will work. I only know a little about both...I know celexa releases seratonin and welbutrin works on dopamine and something else, but how does welbutrin decrease the side effects?

Frank, You may want to look at one of the TCA's if you have a problem with the Celexa. I currently take both and it has helped with my depression and panic. As far as a sex life goes, things work OK but there isn't a lot of interest in it. Hopefully it will work out for you so that you don't end up searching for a long time.
