Best time to take Pamelor?

Posted by Rich on December 8, 1999, at 19:32:23

I was recently prescribed 75 mg Pamelor and have been on it for slightly over two weeks. I was told to take it at bedtime and I have been taking it at 10 PM. However, I believe it has been interfering with my sleep somehow, taking it right before bedtime. I have never taken an antidepressant at bedtime before, always in the morning.

My Pdoc told me today that I could switch the Pamelor around, taking it in the AM at breakfreast like a normal antidepressant. He also told me I could split it up throughout the day. My question is "what is the best time to take Pamelor?" Why is it prescribed at bedtime? Is it best to split the dose up into two or three doses? My Pdoc also just gave me the option of increasing to 100 mg today, but before I increase I want to get my daily dose scheduling down correctly.

Bottom line is it best to take at bedtime or in the AM? Or split it up throughout the day?

Thanks

I found it best in mid to late afternoon. That way the sedative action kicked in best when it was time for bed. Any later than mid afternoon seemed to interfere with sleep and carryover into the next day too much. So in my opinion the answer to your questions is "none of the above"...try it around 3:00 or 4:00 PM instead.

I take mine about an hour before bed. I am taking 100mg (2-50mg pills). My pdoc gave me the option of splitting it but because I also take other meds that help with sedation I find that I can sleep OK. Dinner time or mid afternoon sound like good options.
