Are these drugs ever given in a combination or just one or the other. Also, if taken at the same time what would happen?

I have taken both at different times. Not sure if I can answer your question because I was switched from one to the other. Personally, I had a much better reaction to Zyprexa. The Risperdal made me feel like a zombie. I had no emotions at all. With the Zyprexa I am pretty functional and it has relieved my suicidal ideations which were the biggest concern at the time. I've never seen anything in the literature that indicates they conflict with each other but you may want to check someplace like www.rxlist.com.
