Anyone had this?

Posted by Chris on November 25, 1999, at 15:39:11

From various anti-depressants I've had this weird
effect where it's like there is something crawling
inside my head and weird shooting sensations going
through my head like icey water trickling through it.
I don't get this off meds but I had to stop taking
phenelzine which was one of the first that worked
for me. I've never heard anyone mention it before,
but it scares me big time when it comes on. Also
the wind blowing through my hair gives horrible
sensations.

What is this?

Chris, what I have experienced is similar, but not as bad(I haven't had to stop any particular meds. because of it.).
Anyway, I get this brief, double rushing sensation(it's a feeling that is almost a sound). Several times a day, for no apparent reason, this, sort of vibrational rush(like, SSHHHOOOOOMMM- SSHHHOOOOMMM), goes through my brain. Hard to explain the exact feeling. Anyway, I don't know if it's related to your experience or not, but thought I'd post it for a beginning comparison. Good luck!CarolAnn

Carol Ann, WOW. I have something like that, too, and have never been able to get any doctor to begin to understand. They just look at me and nod with a vacant look, and I know they think I am crazy. It hasn't happened in a while, but I used to have days when I would get the swooshing sound in my head when I moved my eyes from side to side. I noticed that it seemed related to blood pulsing, because the swoosh would sound for several pulse beats before fading out. What the heck is this thing?

I definately get the ice thing goin on but not onk,y in my head in my body too. I also get the weird tickle feeling in my brain. I als can see my heart beat with a dull grey color aroiund my vision every time my heart beats. I think it is probably something to do with one or more of the thousand chemicals that us nor doctors have begun to understand. The brain does weird things. I hate that we dont know what causes these horrible feelings. Good Luck. Amy II

I get that sometimes. No swooshing sound, like CarolAnn and Noa, but a weird, ice water trickling down inside my brain sort of thing. It goes away for me when I've been on the drugs for a while, and Effexor, which works best for me, is the worst offender for this.

I don't know what it is, but it is disturbing to say the least. Since it goes away after a while, I remind myself that the drugs work great for me, stay on them, and try not to think about what they may be doing to my brain!

Good Point.. I just sit here and listen to music sometimes and it makes me feel better. Sublime.. Gotta love it.

I have had this, mostly from MAOI's (on Marplan now) and have heard it referred to as "brain shocks" in various medical lit. They say it is annoying and sometimes scarey but harmless.

This sounds like it may be caused by a rise or fall in blood pressure. Does it occur when you move your head or body position? I think it has something to do with the effects of the drug on the vagus nerve. Is the medication an MAOi or a neuroleptic? Did you recently start this medicine? Do you ever feel faint or dizzy when this happens? What about headaches? I am a psychiatric nurse and I've heard many descriptions of side effects. I'm always interested in hearing about these experiences. CAROLE

Carole, actually, I've have always had quite low blood pressure(even when it's high,it's low on the scale). My meds. are 400mgs Wellbutrin & 225mgs Serzone per day, and have had the effect for several months, ever since I started antidepressants(which have been changed a few times in efforts to find something that works). No headaches or dizziness, and there is no particular circumstance when the effect happens. It just does a few times a day. CarolAnn

Are you talking of "newer" Antidepressents or of
the "older" types? My mother has been on and off
of Ad's for most of her life and has told me
many times that the "older" versions would give
her the feelings that you had described here.

Just a thought..

Laura~
