Celexa Side Effects

Posted by Lisa on March 18, 1999, at 12:11:37

I have been on Celexa for 3 months. I have noticed an increase in water retention especially around my eyes in the morning. Has anyone experienced this? I have started to have a neck ache which I also had when I was on zoloft. It can be best described as a pulled neck muscle and aches like I have a "kink" in my neck. This is the whole reason I had to come off zoloft. Has any one experienced this? My depression has lifted but not dramatically. I have been on 40mg for 2 months. I had added Effexor 37.5mg but it made my irritable & angry (with the combination). I have also noticed the celexa does very little for my obcessive-compulsiveness & anger. Any input would be appreciated.

Perhaps you are angry at something/someone for good reason?
The drug will not make a unfair situition go away.

I have no experience with Celexa but I need to respond to Steve. Steve, there are medications (and combinations of) that have irritability as a side effect. I, certainly, am not free from irritability or anger, but I was on a medication for a short time that really had me on edge and overreacting. As soon as I went off it, I could tell the difference. I would like to give Lisa the credit to tell whether she is angry/irritable because of a situation versus unusual or extreme feelings after starting a new medication. Particularly since she has made special note of it here.
Again, I have not been on Celexa so, sorry Lisa, I can't comment on side effects. I am rarely on antidepressants (it is an AD?) since they don't help for very long (I am a variant of bipolar), but from all the threads at this site, I assume it is the "new Prozac". I hope it helps all those (including Lisa) who seem to be on it.

Lisa, I've noticed the neck pain, too, with both Zoloft and Celexa. I do have a tendency to get tense and sore neck muscles, but it has definitely been more pronounced while I've been on these medications.

I also am being treated for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I would say the Celexa has made *some* difference, and even a little helps alot. The SSRI's seem to reduce my anxiety level and how much things upset me, so that the compulsions lose some of their edge - there's more "room" in my life for other things.

The most disturbing side effect for me has been the sexual dysfunction. Prozac was actually the most effective for my OCD. I have since tried all the other SSRI's, hoping to find one that doesn't interfere with sex. I have had less trouble with Celexa than the others, and it has helped with the depression, too.

Lisa, I had such bad muscular/skeletal pain with zoloft that I finally had to come off of it. I waited until I could barely turn my neck. I am now on Celexa and the only side effect so far is very dry mouth and nose. In spite of this, I am now increasing the dose from 20 to 30 mgs. I also have recently noticed an increase in anger, something that was not an issue with the zoloft. I am hoping the increase in the dose will deal with this. What used to be an annoyance now sits in my gut as anger.

Torrey, I've been on celexa for 10 weeks and think it is great. Only down fall is similar to your "sexual dysfunction". Is there anything you know of that can help in this department? I've read that skipping
your dose on the weekends helps, althought, my doctor does not seem to think this will help. Any suggestions?

Lisa,
I was on zoloft since April of this year until 5 days ago. My doctor switched me to celexa because I had complained about night sweats and decreased libido. Ho

Lisa,
I have been on celexa for almost a year now with no real sides.
However about three weeks ago I have had to increase my does to 60mg/day.
Now I have neck pain and headaches much like you discribed.

i am starting to wonder if just going off my meds
is a smarter and safer move to make. Zoloft helped
tremendousely for a year.... i am not having luck with
trying alternatives. Celexa freaked me out and the wellbutrin
started out great today until I peaked and felt like
i was nervous, paranoid,stuttering mess. I'm scared
it seems that all the AD wear off. What if you stop than start again?
and all the weight nightmares.... is it an increase
in eating that causes the weight or metabolism slow down?
I am a bottomless pit. I have always been and have always been
obsessed with weight and food. Do I have to live with this hang up?
AD are only quick fixes it seems and who knows the damage it might cause
down the line. I feel like i started living 2 yrs ago and now i feel
like i'm grasping for air. DAMN. Oh, that Steve
that suggests aggitation being a personal problem...if you only
knew.

I have been on 20 mg celexa for over 6 months..and frankly i have had it... Yes...water retention...weight gain...drowsiness and a totally opposite affect of mood when I get my period...it is making me crazy...and I think it is time to go off meds. I have tried most all of them...and the side effects are just not worth it anymore. I just recently had an episode of a bad reaction to SOY capsule with Celexa 20 mg...and I think I am ready to take the plunge and look for something other than Anti's. Maybe i just need to make better choices starting with more prayer and less trivial worrying about who to please next.I sympathize with anyone who is frustrated with looking for an AD that helps to balance the body chemistry....and I envy those that find one. TOday is the first day I have started withdrawal of CELEXA....will keep you posted of what happens next.

Yes, Is the neck pain from celexa?

Posted by Anne on March 18, 2000, at 10:27:27

I, too have had neck pain since I've been on celexa but I didn't think it was from the celexa but rather from being at the computer too long and not sitting right. But I wonder if I'm right on that now. I had the neck pain and some thoracic pain that I've had before and the doctor claimed it was from the thoracic pain that the neck pain came from. But now I only have a slight kink and am putting heat on my neck and taking hot baths and the occasional muscle relaxer and antiarthritic because I was told I have that developing also. I guess I never thought that an antidepressant could cause neck pain but who knows now? Where are the experts at on this? Back pain is also a common thing for people so I wonder if you are right or what?

Withdrawing from Celexa

In reply to Re: Celexa Side Effects, posted by Glenda on March 18, 2000, at 10:03:26

I noticed menstrual irritability and I attributed it to the increase in salt and caffeine and sugar in my diet. If I can cut down on those things and see if I still experience those menstrual difficulties then I'll know better of what's doing it. I've also had an eating problem for many years that I cannot attribute to Celexa because of my history with that. I did notice the puffy face but after I've been eating too much for weeks, too. Those are my ideas. Hope the withdrawal goes well for you. Celexa has been good for me for depression but not ocd and I had to cut down to 10 mg. to stop the nervousness and I also take other medicines so I have a combo going that is different from yours most likely, too. I take 10 mg. paxil, 10 mg. celexa and 1 mg of risperdal: for depression, ocd, ptss.

I have been on Celexa for 4 months and during those four months I have been miserable. The pdoc thinks its seasonal affective disorder which it appears the Celexa is not touching. But the side effects are numerous including puffiness around the eyes, increased appetite, nightmares, abdominal gas and others. I recently moved to Cleveland and will try to find a new and hopefully 21st century pdoc.

Hope I'm not too late to this discussion. I have experienced
muscle pain, more in the shoulder areas. I also attributed this to hunching over the PC, working on minutiae.
I also experience clenched teeth, and pain or stiffness in muscle areas that get an inordinate amount of activity
(eg: walking (legs), playing an instrument (hands/forearms). Stretching and foot massage
have become a luxury in my mid years. Herbal teas chill me out to a degree.

Sex, of course, is moot---an issue that requires
regular dialogue with my mate.

Above all, I must add that, BC (before celexa)
I never experienced such regularly interesting, mysteriously vivid
dreams as I do now.

Okay, now I know it's not just me. I have a kink in my neck constantly, intense jaw pain, increased teeth grinding, cramps in my feet and toes, and I feel like someone punched me in both my upper arms. Also headaches, nausea, sleeplessness, jittery.

I had these same sides from Effexor. I was hoping Celexa would be "the one" but I don't know. I am FRUSTRATED with this whole AD game the doc likes to play.
