Yes, it is safe, yes it helps with sleep and is utilized for anxiety. It is a Tri Cyclic Antidepressant or "TCA". I have been on it for a while. It is a very old and well documented antidepressant. There is a ton of info on this site and all over the internet. How much are you taking, what for and anything else you want to add to help clarify what questions you have?

I have terrible had insomnia the last two months. Tried remeron did not help with sleep. Either did trazodone. Been tried trying Prozac the last two weeks, I am lucky if I get two three hours a night. I think the prozac has made things worse. Right now I don't know if I am depressed from lack of sleep or visa versa. Right now I'm going to just try 25 mgs of elavil and hope for a good nights sleep. By the way which is more sedating: Remeron, elavil, or trazodone??????>

I agree with Dove that the Elavil is very safe and somewhat sedating. My father was on it for almost 30 years and it really helped out his depression. I take Nortriptyline (another TCA) with Zyprexa. The Zyprexa is an antipsychotic which is also sedating. It has helped me over a major hump in my depression. You may want to ask about it.

BTW, Trazadone never did a thing for me either.

I am also taking Prozac and it is really effecting my sleep. It is no small feat to actually fall asleep and stay there for more than a few hours. I also use melatonin and am now taking 3mgs as opposed to 0.5 mgs before the prozac. I need to up the Amitriptyline if this keeps up, but wanted to give the prozac a full month before doing so.

I'm taking 75 mgs and it does help a little. I am interested in how it works out for you, so keep us updated. The best of luck to you.
