Hi bobbi. Over the years I've had so many sex problems on ADs that I've read up on lots of herbal sex enhancers. I found them to be mildly helpful, but usually the AD anti-sex power is just too much to overcome. With a low dose or no dose of an AD, I can see how these herbs could work real well.

The only FDA approved drug for sex is Yohimbine. It is prescrip, mainly for erection probs, but has been reported to be of benefit to women as well. The AD Wellbutrin was almost marketed once as a sexual stimulant, before attention was focused on it as an AD instead. In a clinical study it was shown to have prosexual effects in 70% of people who tried it.

With drugs or herbs, weeks of use are necessary. I don't know of any immediate sex stimulaters, other than Viagra. Some women have tried their husband's Viagra with positive results. In any case, they all (except Viagra) involve weeks of use for an effect, and any one may or may not work in a particular person. Just like anything else.

Choices in the herbal arena are many. Gingko Biloba can enhance sexual function in all phases (desire, libido, ability). There's Maca Root. The potency wood Muira Puama is highly touted. Also Damiana, Oat Straw, Tribulus, Nettles, and Yohimbe (the tree bark Yohimbine is derived from). There are others too. I think the most popular ones are Muira Puama and Maca Root.

The amino acid L-Arginine is also used for both men and women.

Some companies make herbal formulas with a variety of all these ingredients. I saw one called Libido Blast. Touchfire His and Touchfire Hers. Male Response. Others. Try doing a search on the mentioned herbs and you'll find a host of websites with interesting reading to learn more. There are plenty of things to try. You'll just have to browse around in a search to learn more about what's available. But some of the names I've mentioned will point you in the right direction.

sex enhancing drugs - selegiline

Hi, Bobbi. I've been particularly sensitive to the sexual side effects of SSRI's, SNRI's,and MAOI's. It seems that there is always at least some sexual side effect. To make matters worse, there is frequently weight gain. The sexual side effect is quite complicated and multi-dimensional: interest, arousal, erectile (males, of course), stimulation, orgasm, intensity of orgasm, etc. It's still not particularly well understood, and there seem to be few closed label placebo controlled studies among alternative therapies. My personal experience is that signifiant sexual dysfunction is difficult to reverse or minimize while staying on the existing drug, in spite of various augmentation strategies. Switching classes of drugs frequently makes more sense, such as switching from sertraline (zoloft), an SSRI, to venlafaxine or nefazodone (SNRI's). Gabapentin (Neurontin) and Buspar are supposed to be devoid of sexual side effects. In fact, Buspar is frequently prescribed to counteract SSRI induced sexual dysfunction.

By the way, I did try high dose selegiline (60 mg/day). At this dose, this MAOI loses its selectivity for MAO-B and becomes non-selective nd non-reversible for MAO-B and MAO-A. So, you need to keep in mind the dietary restrictions. I've never had any problem drinking regular beer, eating pizza, and drinknig white wine. I do stay away from red wine and very aged cheeses. That's about it for me. Oh,there are also some cold medications you need to stay away from. But, on the whole, the dietary concern seems to be somewhat overblown, and most experienced psychopharmacologists feel very comfortable prescribing MAOI's, even as first line medication.

Back to the selegiline . . . It was a very sexually enhancing drug for me. From a male perspective, firmer erections, less stimulation required for orgasm, increased intensity of orgasms, and increased ability to have multiple orgasms within a relatively short time frame. Lastly, my sexual appetite increased dramatically, sometimes to the point of absolute distraction. But, again, I didn't achieve this until reaching 60 mg/day of selegiline.

Please be sure to consult with your pscyhopharmacologist and discuss what other drugs you make currently be taking, including herbal supplements. He or she will be in the best position to determine if selegiline monotherapy is appropriate for you.

Good luck, Bobbi. John :)

Thanks for your candor John on a sensitive subject.
I was just curious, how long did you take selegine
to get to 60m/dy? How long after reaching this dose
did you notice the mentioned effects?
Thanks again!

Ditto.

I'm taking it transdermally, so it's difficult to comment in a widely applicable way on dose, but my guess is the effective dose is very high.

Reading this makes me very happy, as I may eventually end up on high-dose oral selegiline (just as an aside)

Umm , ditto on all of that. Add to it an inability to just roll over and go to sleep. A little scary, but in a good way!

P.S. I tried Wellbutrin to counteract the sexual side-effects of Effexor. It did nothing. I tried gingko to help with Celxa. Again, nothing (but an upset stomach).
