Moclobemide/Mannerix availability

Posted by Susannah on August 1, 1998, at 10:53:32

I've taken Parnate and Nardil with great help for an
unusual dysthemic/obsessive thought disorder, but
develop daytime hypersomnia from both and have
excessive perspiration, especially from the caffeine
I need to keep functioning. I wonder if moclobemide
would be helpful and how to get it.

As far as whether it would be helpful, I think the
first step would be to talk to your psychiatrist.
As far as how to get it, assuming you're in the US,
there's some information at:

REPLY:

The only time Moclobemide ever helped me was when I was taking Biaxin at the same time for an infection. It was potentiated since they are both metabolized in the liver. If anyone can write me and let me know their successes and failures, I would like to know.

Thanks.

Moclobemide has been a magic bullet for me. I have tried possibly every other medication prescribable, and though it has on occassions increased my dysthimic/obsessive thoughts, it completely stops my otherwise profound sweating in public places due to anxiety.

Some drugs people have recommended to me have not worked. My GP says we're all different to some degree. However, I have lost weight on moclobemide. On immipramine I gained 3 stone. No sexual dysfunction unless you call wanting it three times a day as opposed to once a week a dysfunction. No headaches, nothing. Has increased my sensitivity to abandonment feelings, but that's about it.
Hope it works for you too, but don't be too disappointed if your magic potion is another drug somewhere else down the line.

I'm not sure the side-effect profile for
Marplan is any different than that for
either Parnate or Nardil, but you may want
to talk to your doctor about giving it a try. Marplan became available again early this year
(1999). It is an irreversable MAO-inhibitor,
so you would need to adhere to the same dietary
restrictions (not so bad) as you did with the
other two.

* In reply to your question as to whether moclobemide would be helpful, I'm not sure that anyone is in a better position to answer that question than you. I tried it. It didn't work.
More accurately - it didn't continue to work. I'm not sure that there is a single antidepressant currently available for which this scenario has not occurred. However, I have seen more posts on the newsgroups describing relapse with moclobemide than either Nardil or Parnate.
I have also seen posts in which moclobemide was was described as being very effective. I get the impression that moclobemide has fewer side-effects than the other available MAO inhibitors.
Although as a reversible MAO-I, it is touted as needing no dietary restrictions, there are case reports to the contrary. You may want to do your own literature-search using the Medline resource available at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/medline.html

Good Luck!

- Scott
