Modafinil experiences needed -- can't find thread

Posted by anita on November 1, 1999, at 21:10:53

I'm considering trying modafinil (Provigil) just to be able to stay awake all day. I'm interested in people's experiences with it (whether it worked for this, side effects, etc.).

I know there was some discussion about this a short time ago but I can't find it, so please could you repeat?

Thanks!

anita

Hello, Anita!

I tried Adrafinil (an earlier version of Modafinil) for depression. I found it was ineffective for elevating mood, but it sure would work for keeping me awake all night if that is what I wanted. All in all, it was a fairly subtle stimulation - not like I was bouncing off the walls or such.

Yes, it will keep you awake. I found it overstimulating/jittery and not particularly good for attention problems (this was with Parnate; may try it again now, since I'm currently not taking an MAOI).

I have been on Ritalin, Provigil (Modafinil), Dexedrine, and Adderall. All have helped except for Modafinil. I could hardly feel it do anything. There were no side effects and no crash, as well as no "medicated feeling". But it wasn't effective. I would take either 200 or 400 mg hoping it would help me stay awake but it was never successful. I could sleep on it very easily which didn't help. Modafinil stimulates the brain stem. It doesn't work much on dopamine like other stimulants. But for some people, it's all they need and it works wonders. I experienced no significant side effects if any. It's worth a try i suppose.

My experience has been 100% the opposite of the this when using Provigil as part of my Social Phobia cocktail. Outside of the cost, it is a wonderful medicine. It has far exceeded my expectations, with lots of benefits but no side effects at 100 mg (occasionally spiked to 200 mg).

I have a combination of sleep apnea and RLS.
I've been through numerous treatments and studies, the latest being Provigil. This has no noticable effect on me. I take 400 mg/day. I do believe it is causing me incredible "crashes" around 4 or 5pm.
Drs. (3 of them at three different sleep study centers) have yet to figure out how to treat my problems.
Good Luck!!

James -

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. I had sleep apnea as well, and the combination of weight loss and anxiety-reduction (I'm betting more on the former) surprisingly took care of it completely -- at least so far. I couldn't tolerate the CPAP, but would probably have forced myself to try harder to accept it had the apnea stuck.

I started to ask some questions about treatments you've tried for the RLS and apnea, as well as other meds and disorders that may figure in (including psych), but if you've got three specialists working with you I'm sure you've tried lots of approaches. I'm also sure you're aware that many meds have the potential to worsen apnea, including benzos and many antisepressants (I DO take both myself, all to control anxiety).

I WILL ask two questions, should you care to answer: Have you had, or considered, surgery for the apnea? Have you tried Neurontin for the RLS?

Good Luck,
Rick
