Ahh, heck, I'm gonna say it anyway.

Posted by Jane (janey girl) on October 23, 1999, at 9:50:07

saint james,

Kiss my ass. Sorry Dr. Bob, I tried to craft a more
"civil" way to say this, but everything just came off
as defensive.

No, saint james, I'm not "everybody," but I am in the
majority when it comes to side effects from Effexor
withdrawal. Effexor was a great drug for me -- the best
as a matter of fact.

I left this board more than a year ago because of personal
attacks, and this time I'm not waiting around to get
more of them.

Bye folks. Good luck to those who need it.

Jane

Jane~
I'm so sorry you feel attacked, and I really wish you could stay and feel safe enough to share. You have given me so much to think about and have helped me clarify my own views and feelings. I apologize for any insensitive comments that have gone your way and I truly hope you will remain and if that is not healthy for you I wish you well in your decision.

You have the right to stand up for yourself and I totally support you in that but I also really enjoy your company :-) Do what you need to do and whatever the decision, you will remain in my thoughts and I hope we hear from you again.

Well, put, Dove.

Jane, I wish you wouldn't go. As you can see, the negativity-swapping didn't really get anywhere, it stopped. I, for one, would work hard to make sure this board does not turn into a place to attack others. And I would work to bring it back to what it has been for me, I would fight for that and not give up unless or until it was clear that the fight to save it is not working. And I know there are many others who would do the same. Stay, Jane. I think occasional spats will happen, but we won't let them turn into long exchanges of attack. We just won't. This board is too important.

I don't even think there was a spat or anything else going on here. Just people expressing different opinions. All of them respectable. Words often come across wrong on the computer when you can't hear the person or see them. I think it's also common in our state of mind to take things personally. I think we shouldn't do that. Not here anyway. This is a great forum to exchange ideas and share opinions. Not a place to take anything personally.

Jane,

Full Moon tomorrow! Please take that into consideration before you leave a lot of caring people who may benefit by your good advice and who have a lot of good advice of their own to offer.

Just about everyone on this board is dealing with some kind of serious problem(s). We should all try to bear in mind the wise words of George Carlin: "Don't sweat the petty stuff, and don't pet the sweaty stuff!" (Jane - not making light of the situation - just trying to elicit a smile from you.)

James here....

Thanks Jamie, so much. I never flame or insult. I like a good discussion and don't mind a heated debate, but it has to remain on the intellectual level always, and not get personal. I think it is important to be able "to agree not to agree" at some point or the worthwhile discussion and exchange of ideas stops.

Do remember I have ADD. I work hard at being extra polite in person because we ADD people tend to put our foot in our mouth allot. Basically not edit the first thing we come up with in a lighting fast ADD mind; dress it up of public consumption. I am esp careful about written stuff because it can be read so many ways. I so slip up now and then.

Jane (janey girl) I am sorry if I hurt you. I was not my intent. I don't like flaming, and like you, just leave if it gets to angry. I hope you will continue to add your unique voice to this board in the future.

A cautionary tale ...

In reply to Re: Ahh, heck, I'm gonna say it anyway., posted by jamie on October 23, 1999, at 13:23:33

It's like Jamie said ...

I think it would be good for everyone to take a look back at the posts that led to this. See if you can take different perspectives from it.

I've offered apologies myself a couple of times due to things being read differently than I intended. Not "misread", but differently read.

E-text is quite hollow compared to normal, f2f communication. There is no inflection of voice, no non-verbal gestures or facial expressions ... other than "smilies". We can't even use fake HTML tags if we use angle brackets, because this text gets interpreted and any tags, fake or real, get stripped. Oh, by fake HTML, [drolly]I mean stuff like this [/drolly]. To top things off, the communication is asynchonous ... you can't head off a difference in understanding because we all can get our full messages off before anyone else can read them.

After 15 years on the net, I've seen this sort of thing happen way too often, and I've almost lost one of my dearest friends because of it, long ago. So, if a post you read creates more heat than light for you ... let it sit for a while, let it cool down. These things usually wind up as mutual misunderstandings and not intentional flames (those tend to be much easier to spot!), and the results lead to more sadness than anything.

Stay cooly cool boys and girls

That makes sense, Bob.

In the meantime, it seems Jane is gone.....

Please don't say that -- I've been trying to avoid sense-making for some time now, and deliberate nonsense ain't as easy as it looks .... ;^)

Yep [sniff].
