Can Prozac cause psychosis type effects?

Posted by jp on October 22, 1999, at 6:25:50

Me again,

The Ritalin made me a little edgy, and I am back on Prozac,
which is making me moody and edgy after only 2 days. Weird
body sensation, strange dreams again, jaw clenching, feeling
aggressive, and all that. I have what looks like comorbid
ADD/BPD.

Will this pass? Or not?

This is my 3rd attempt to go on Prozac. I have just
about had it with all the meds stuff, maybe I should
go the St.Johns Wort route, etc.

JP, Prozac definitely can cause all of the side effects you mention. I don't really think of them as markers of psychosis, but rather of agitation. I am on Prozac, which works best for me of all the ADs I have tried (and I've tried almost everything). I recently started Prozac again after taking nothing for 6 months. WHen I started back on the meds, I had ALL of the effects you describe: tension, clenched jaw, strange muscular sensations like twitching, very lucid, bizarre dreams and just overall agitation. The side effects went away after about 2 weeks, but came back again when I increased my dose. I am still increasing my dose, and whenever I go up a step, they return. I found that exercising more really helped me deal with the agitation. Also, I took a benzo at night on occasion, to help with the jaw clenching -- which was so severe that I was waking up with headaches and started to erode my gum line. If it's any consolation, the side effects should lessen or pass. The only side effect that does not seem to pass, at least for me, are the bizarre dreams. Hang in there! Let us know how you're doing.

> Amy here. Funny how you describe yor symptoms as symptom of psychosis. Everybody that has read my post also knows that symptoms you are describing i have without meds! You called it pychosis and it hit home for me. I have the jaw clenching from time to time. Weird dreams also. Maybe the people that are on this site can elaborate on these "strange, weird dreams" they are having. I dont want ot scare anybody off so i dont say anything about mine. But what do we mean by strange dreams. I am curious. Going from normal feeling to this craziness in my head ( what feels like it anyway) the dreams i have are very vivid. Like i am there. Hard to describe if people havent been there. I have several and i mean several dreams a night. I dream of things i have never thought of before nor have ever seen on movies or anything. Some seem very pychotic and yucky others are just relaly vivid and weird. Anybody know what causes that? I'll elaborate on them if people dont mind. I am just curious about others just so i can see if they are at all similar. Body sensations. Can you elaborate on that as well. I also have wierd felings go through my body from what feels like all my nerves are humming and sometimes i get this rush of real cold going through my veins, and then sometimes if feels like i shake and wobble for no reason. I cant believe that a drug like prozac actually makes you feel like that though. Comments ?? Take care. Dazed and confused, AMY II

Re: Prozac v. Efffexor?

It is different for everyone, but Prozac gave me headaches and tinnitus. Regular effexor made me sweat tons, especially from my head. Effexor XR is better. At higher doses, both forms of effexor have caused word retreival problems. Vivid dreams have come with Prozac and both forms of effexor, as has restlessness and difficulty sleeping. I am taking effexor xr, in combo with a bunch of other stuff, for augmentation, and to help me sleep. It isn't perfect--still not sure if it is dealing with the depression fully--feel restless and a bit jittery, but this is a lot better than the severe depression.

Perhaps you need a second med, oops, make that third med to deal with the anxiety. Are you seeing a pdoc or a gp for your meds?

Amy II,

Are you in therapy? After I made my breakthrough in psychotherapy I began to have vivid dreams from 15 years ago. One theory of depression is the "unresolved conflict" theory. I resolved the conflict (my deep feelings regarding my father's death). This opened up my unconscious mind. I have numerous, vivid, real and unreal dreams every night. So, has your mind stumbled accross anything that would begin to resolve any kind of conflict?

dreams and psychotherapy

Hi, AmyII

Some thoughts on dreams and p-therapy spawned by your response...

I noticed a strange quality to my dreams when starting Prozac, but it went away. I did remember, however, that I had my first ever pleasant dream on Prozac for the first time in at least a decade, ones not centered on anxiety and my own incompetence.

I'm glad you were able to work things out with psychotherapy. I had no such luck. I felt like such a different person on SSRI that I felt no need to go. I only wanted to discuss the side effects of the drug. (plus, my therapist wasn't a get-to-the-problem type, he only wanted to discuss how my day went. On Prozac, my days went pretty well, nothing to talk about, no inspiration. Did you have this problem with you p-therapy??

Hi there. A lot of people get jitters on Prozac at first. It might mean you need to start on a lower dose and increase it gradually. How much are you taking right now?

(Yes, it does pass, but it's better not to have to go through it in the first place.)

St. John's wort is a medicine too, it just happens to be over-the-counter. Out of curiosity, have you considered alternatives to Prozac - maybe a mood stabilizer such as Depakote or Lamictal?
