Would appreciate any info from people taking depakote with Neurontin. Have taken depakote alone for years but have tapered down to 250 mgs/day due to extreme fatigue. Will be adding Neurontin to the depakote to try to get my mood more stabilized without adding more fatigue. Has anyone found Neurontin in small doses to be the cause of sleepiness?

I am not taking Depakote and Neurontin together, although I have taken each separately. Neurontin can cause sleepiness or grogginess, especially at the beginning but that side effect should taper off. I only take 300mg, at night, so any sleepy effects don't affect me during the daytime. Otherwise, one of the benefits of Neurontin is the practically nil side effects.

My teenage son takes both Neurontin and Depakote with good results. He's BP I with primarily depressive symptoms. Depakote made him tired and sleep a lot. When Neurontin was tried as a single mood stabilizer, it was too activating for him--it did not make him sleepy at all. So Depakote was added to balance out Neurontin, and he's been very stable on this combination along with other neuroleptic meds.

Have been taking depakote for years 1000 mg at bed time, is destorying my liver. So to offset reduce Depakote to 750 3x aday with Neurontin 300 mg 3x aday. I feel very drowsy, claims this temporary, please keep him updated.
Kind regards,
Jackie

Ellen,
My son takes 1,200 mg Neurontin and 500 mg Depakote a day along with 5 grams of Omega-3 fish oil. He also takes 30 mg BuSpar for anxiety and 10 mg Zyprexa which has made his violent rages disappear. Seroquel was prescribed to be taken as needed for sleep, but he takes it every night as it helps him get deep, restful sleep (he saids without Seroquel, his mind stays active even during sleep and he doesn't feel rested). These may be a lot of meds for a 17 year old, but he's very med compliant because this particular mix happens to work well for him. Thank God for new medications and his highly capable psychopharmacologist.

I take 4,000 mg of Neurontin daily and 2 mg Klonopin three times daily. I have also added Depakote in the past but it didn't really improve my moods. The combo I am on now works wonders for me. I am also on Serzone and verapamil. Verapamil also helps stabilize my mood.
