Lamictal usage

Posted by Patricia on September 1, 1999, at 16:11:12

I'd like to hear from some folks with bipolar disorder who have had success with lamictal (and at what dose) for a chronic, refractory depression. I have not had any good results with the usual antidepressants...I won't try the MAOI's.

Patricia, are you on Lamictal or just inquiring about it? I am at 125mg, which is low-medium. No side effects at all. It takes a while though because increasing dose by just 25mg a week is crucial to avoid some kind of dangerous rash related to quick dose increases. Since I also take Prozac it's hard to know which does what. I am better than I have been in quite a while, but my primary symptom of anhedonia is still there. I am much more confident and at-ease in social situations that used to make me very nervous. Lamictal does have considerable antidepressant qualities in addition to mood stability, but I think at higher doses. I tell you though, it's hard to find anything with little or no side effects. Lamictal has no side effects at all for me. We are all different. Lamictal will work for some and not others. Like anything else. But I would recommend it as a first choice due to its favorable side effect profile. Often when antidepressant trials don't work, a mood stabilizer will. At least one previous post claimed Lamictal was the only thing that helped his depression after trying all kinds of other stuff.

Hi Patricia,
I was on lamictal, not for bi-polar but for chronic major depression. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I've been on 35+ meds in various combinations, and so far only the MAOI's have heped. (Read the above thread "Antidepressants (Parnate) for more info about my experience with MAOI's.) I don't remember the dosage on the lamictal; I hope it helps you! (If we all responded to the same ADs we wouldn't need so many!)
Kim
