Should one take Prozac @night to avoid drowisness?

Posted by terraflux on August 31, 1999, at 13:55:01

A common side effect of prozac is that it tends to make one drowsy for a few hours after taking it. Would it therefore be advisable to take it at night time instead of in the morning?

Prozac makes you drowsey? I would have loved that! Prozac made me an anxiety-riddled, hyperactive nut case. (and usually I'm a relaxed nut case) Didn't matter what time of day or night I took it- I was wide awake all night 2-3 hours sleep tops.

Of course, one man's poison is another man's 8-hours of restful sleep. That's one thing I have definately learned here - everyone reacts differently to meds.

Ah....sleep - its WAY under-rated.

Take it at night

When I was on Prozac it made me sleepy so my doc advised me to take it at night and this is the only way it worked for me. I think that is pretty standard for any of the AD's. If they make you drowsy, just take it at night instead of the morning. No big deal and it should help your sleep too!

I have heard about this approach working very well with some people. Actually sometimes the time chosen to dose is all that's needed to tweek the effectiveness of the drug. Through trial and error you can find your own best time of the day or night to take your medicine.

This is so fascinating to me. When I took Prozac (and the same is true for other SSRIs and SRIs) they were so activating for me, making it hard for me to sleep even 16-18-20 hours after dosing. It is fascinating how differently we all react to the same substances. That is why this site is so great--I am learning so much.

I had problem with drowsiness with Serzone, which I take am. & pm.
I just wrote the post 'Serzone and work' a bit down the list how I solved this, and it now works really well.
I take the med @ 5 a.m., then sleep the drowsiness off for three hours, and I feel none of the side effects all day.
