pemoline

What about hepatic failure associated with pemoline? I'm aware of the latest FDA and Abbott pronouncements. Are the 15 cases believable and are there more out there? Also, what prompted the FDA to black box this drug after so many years?

Is pemoline also known as Cylert?

I received a copy of the FDA alert a few years ago. Don't know any more than that. If I dig up the alert, I'll let you know.

I recall reading that most (if not all) of the liver failures with Cylert involved very young children. I don't know if this serious reaction has to do ONLY with age, but it appears to be primarily a problem for the younger set. Problems with Cylert can usually be averted by close monitering of liver function during the initial days or weeks of treatment. The vast majority of people who take Cylert do perfectly well on it.
So, yes, those reported adverse reactions ARE believable and it is only ethical for Abbott to report them. But, that doesn't mean over-reaction and hysteria should take hold. For most who need it and take it, Pemoline is a great med.
