TCA's--Constipation--Does it go away?

Posted by Roo on August 16, 1999, at 7:22:13

Started low dose disipramine a week ago (25 mg's)...
haven't taken a dump in a week. I know this is a
side effect of the TCA's, but does it go away
eventually? Anyone have any experience with this?
Yoinks....(!)

Roo
Last year I took desipramine and the constipation was horrible! It does go away for some people but not for me. Of course, I was on 400 mg which is a healthy(?) dose by anyone's standards. I stood it for 3 months and that was it for TCAs for me. Hopefully, at such a low dose, this will be a temporary side effect for you.

Sweet Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick, I certainly
hope so!!! I'm supposed to go up to 75 mg's. The
side effects have been very trying, but I'm trying
to hang in there in hopes that they'll go away and
this will be a better drug for me sexually.

Care to report anything else about your experience
on desipramine? Did you have sexual side effects
with it?

ROFL! This is going in my file of colorful language. I love it!
About the side effects of desipramine for me:
The constipation was the worst, but urine retention was a close second. These two stuck around until the end. (I should mention that I am prone to slight constipation even without drugs.) Dry mouth, frequent urination and stomach spasms were temporary. To be honest Roo, I felt so sick, sex was the last thing on my mind. I don't know if I was anorgasmic or not. Usually I try it out even when I'm not interested to see how a new drug is affecting me. This time I was too miserable.
I will not remember my desipramine trial with fondness. At 75 mg, you probably will not experience anything like I did!

Hi Roo! Just wanted you to know that not a day goes by that I don't think about you and your struggle with a new set of side effects. I can sure relate. That waiting period really draws on the strength and faith, doesn't it? Though everyone has their own cross to bear, I don't think undepressed folks have a clue of the extraordinary strength we depressed folks display. Waiting for side effects to mellow out, waiting for some kind of sign, some light at the end of the tunnel. You know it will happen, you just don't know when. Somewhere out there in the vast world is someone thinking about you and getting through the day, hour by hour, with you. JohnL.

I don't want to jump to any conclusions, b/c it's
only been a week, but I sure have felt rather sick.
I'm NOT depressed, and I can feel it working on my
depression, but I feel slightly ill all the time.
My appetite is way down, but I feel like I'm putting
on weight even though I'm eating less...I feel
spacey and dizzy. The constipation is really annoying,
and it's strangely resistant to any over the counter
remedies. The sex thing is kind of funny...
I think I'm noticing a positive difference--I don't
have that numb feeling like with prozac, but now I
have no drive at all. With prozac it was the opposite--
plenty of drive, but no feeling.
Anyway...I'll give it a chance...a month at least...
Thanks for your response :-)

Wow--That sure is nice, John--thanks alot. It really
does help! That waiting period really is tough--never
really knowing what's you and what's the drug and how
long to wait before giving up and trying something
else.
Anyway, just wanted to thank you for your response.
It was so heartwarming and sweet, and it comforted
me.

ps. read your post about guitar playing and it made
me really sad. I was also impressed that you've
played for so long! I have a feeling that the
spark will come back to you.
pps. I play banjo, and a _little_ guitar myself :-)

Have you tried an herbal stimulant (super cleanse or zand's laxative), a lot of vitamin C (3000 mgs. through day)and some magnesium? Helped with SSRI's and me.
