Anyone familiar with TCA side effects?

Posted by Roo on August 12, 1999, at 6:51:12

Hi,

Just started my first low dose of disipramine a couple
of days ago. I've noticed I get these fever/chill like
feelings. Goose bumpy feelings, and sometimes hot flashes.
Sweat bullets doing the littlest things. (Of course
I'm in North Carolina where it's 100 degrees)....my heart
rate feels a little faster too.

Just wondering if anyone else experienced these side
effects on a TCA and if they go away with time....

Hi Roo,
It's fairly common for TCA's to cause increased sweating and heartrate, especially at the outset of treatment. (Also other typical "anticholinergic" effects like dry mouth, constipation, etc.) In my experience, most side-effects decrease and/or go away after a few weeks, but everyone tends to be a bit different on this level.
Best,
JD

Roo -

Much of what you are saying sounds familiar. The
side effects do get better with time and for me,
amitriptyline really worked well for a long time.
Good luck,

Sean.

I am taking Amitriptyline, a TCA and those side-effects are common. I noticed them for the first 3 weeks and then they disappeared. Keep yourself hydrated and hopefully they'll be gone soon. Good luck.

Just wanted to thank you all for responding :-)
I really appreciate it. I already notice the
side effects lessening, thank god. I'm still
a little bit depressed and notice my temper flare
more than with SSRI's, but I expect that will
improve with time and dosing increase too. (I'm
only taking 25 mg's for one week so far, along with
10 mg's of prozac, which we'll eventually stop
altogether).
Dove, I have a question for you--how has your sex
life been with your TCA? That's the main reason
I'm trying a switch b/c the SSRI's have numbed
my sexual response, and I'm hoping for better
results with a TCA. I hope that's not too personal.

Thanks again,
Ruth/roo
