Meditation, Yoga & non-medicinal alternatives..???

Posted by dj on August 10, 1999, at 11:12:21

Anyone have any success stories related to these or other approachs? A n editroial accompanying the April 1999 Psych. Today cover story on Depression indicated that there may be a study coming out with a postive report on the value of meditation...I've dabbled in both but haven't sustained the efforts of those or breath focused approachs. Anyone out there made any long term efforts and had any positive results???

I'm particularly interested in methods of alleviating the physical tensions which mirror the mental tensions and apathy, in my experience.... Insights, experiences??...

Here's a bit from the April '99 Psychology Today cover story won the bodily impacts of depression -- how it affects the brain, the heart, etc...In the editorial at the start it is noted that: "...the new biology of depression also makes a strong case for non-drug therapies...."The defecit in activation of the prefrontal cortex that we and others have identified in depression may be something that can be changed with cognitive therapy." (Richard Davidson -- U. of Wisconsin). Or a stripped-down and tightly focused component of cognitive therapy called behavioural activation, pioneered by psychologist Neil Jacobsen at the University of Washington."

However what I found even more interesting and am wondering if you know anything about is the following: "It may also be changed with meditation. A British researcher who just ended a study of depression told me that it was looking good for preventing recurrences of depression. He would not say a word more because his report had just been accepted by a journal..."

Any comments or insights on any of this which you would care to share would be appreciated. I am also curious whether any of you have encountered any positive research on SAMe or 5HTP...or had postive experiences with either..

Hi dj

I meditate twice a day for 20 minutes each session. If I don't meditate, I can feel it by the end of the day. At one point, when my anxiety was very high, I studied yoga daily. Yoga was as affective as any anti-anxiety pill I took but yoga requires time, something we all haven't got to spare. I would say meditation and yoga have helped me enormously. But I still and probably always will need my pills.

I try very hard to meditate for a minimum of five minutes every morning. Sometimes I combine it with yoga/stretching, breathing and chanting. It doesn't produce miraculous results. It does give me a clean start to the day, a little structure, and it often allows me to let go of negative thoughts/feelings in the moment. I'm also on Paxil and I recommend that meditation be used as one of many options for dealing with depression and anxiety. Best of luck.
