Anyone have experience with Cognitive Therapy?

Posted by Thumper on August 9, 1999, at 6:18:14

I'm curious to know how you all feel about Cognitive Therapy experiences. So far my own experience has been brief in duration, but surprisingly helpful. After years of vanilla "talk therapy" which got me no where (expect I paid a lot of $$ for people to listen to me whine), I think I've found something which may actually help me.

Yes i have had lots of help from cognitive therapy. I still have to take paxil but i find that i can often use the methods to stop me becoming more depressed. I find it alot more useful than a pyschiatrist analysing you and listening to your story and telling you nothing that you dont already know. How can they charge so much to sit there and say nothing for so long!
Seriously I am sure there are sone fantastci pshycs out there and they have a very important role to play in prescribing medications. I just havent met hte right one yet. So yes, cognitive therapy is extremely helpful. I hope you get a lot out of it.

I heard the definition of cognitive therapy is this: the factual sense of Star Trek's Spock mixed with the emotion of Bones to end up with the wise mind of Juan Luke Piccard who was so level headed.
If you can identify the negative thoughts and behaviors, you can learn skills to interrupt the cycle of depression (feeling).
In practice, I personally found it to be sessions of ,"this is what you are thinking that is incorrect and think this instead" thanks.

I have found it somewhat useful. One very big problem is finding a therapist who is really well trained in the method and who has the patience to really stick with versions of CT that have been shown effective in studies where therapists are monitored and have to follow fairly specific manuals. Being told that you do not have to gain everybody's approval may be neither therapeutic nor a revelation. Finding the when where and how of the specific images sensations and thoughts that get you down and using efective techniques to be aware of themand anticipate them and get rid of them is another matter. i suggest getting in touch with the American Psychological Association or a good university psych dept with a strong clinical program. And that is no guarantee--the desire to carry on a normal conversation seems more than many therapists can resist. They should sell insurance.

I began seeing a cognitive therapist 9 months ago in addition to my psychiatrist. I have found CT to be enormously helpful both in terms of identifying the thoughts that lead to the depressed and hopeless feelings, and also in terms of it being a more active mode of treatment. It moves you away from "understanding" and adds the dimention of action. I've come to think of my therapist as my coach. It feels like the action orientation has helped move me from the stuck mode. (I am also on medication)
