effexor and urinary retention

Posted by melanie on August 7, 1999, at 17:10:16

I recently started taking effexor in addition to my wellbutrin. Since I have started taking effexor, I have not been able to urinate freely. I just sit there and wait and wait.... I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem? and if so, Does urinary retention go away after a period of time? if so, how long?

Thanks

Melanie,

I was on Effexor for a long time, and for a while also
accompanied with Wellbutrin. I never had any
problem with urinary retention or UTI's.

I have a bladder about the size of a life saver
anyway, and frequently go to the bathroom? I'm
sure everyone is thrilled I shared that bit of info.
~laughing~

Perhaps begin drinking more water. This is summer
and the weather has been intensely hot, perhaps
you're sweating it out?

Good luck.

Just looked at my product insert quickly. Seems urinary problems are reported by at least one out of every hundred on Effexor. I didn't see any comparison to placebo tho. Does anyone out there now more? I especially want to know because I recently had prostate surgery and Im still having some problems. At least I get to play with self catheterization.

I remember reading somewhere (perhaps on this site) that U.R. is a relatively frequent side-effect of reboxetine. Not sure if it has the tendency to diminish over time or not...

Just saw my psydoc today. His only real interest is in psychopharmocology and he has a good reputation. He said Effexor should not affect urinary retention. So, there you go--cost me $70.

Thank you to whoever started this thread.

On Effexor, which has helped my depression, I experience some urinary quirks/problems. Sometimes, the urge to go is so powerful, and starts so suddenly, I am not sure I can make it to the bathroom (sometimes I barely do). I also suspect there is a tiny bit of leaking, since my clothes smell and have to be washed more frequently. Also, sometimes it feels like I have a very full bladder, but when I go to the bathroom, only a trickle comes out. In general, it feels like I have to urinate much more frequently than what I would consider normal (every 15 minutes!!). Perhaps this is a bit more detail than you all want, but hey, that is one of the great things about this form of communication. Anyone have any similar experiences and find improvement on another med?
