Effexor

Posted by Charmane on July 28, 1999, at 10:21:32

I have been on Effexor for about 3 months now. I am having nightmares
every night. I know this has got to be causing them. The
only other med I take is prempro (hormones). Is this a common side effect?
Will it ever cease?

I haven't had nightmares on Effexor XR, which I've taken now for 6 months. Recently we added Prozac to it, which has helped with the depression more.

The side effects I've had with Effexor are things like headaches and not sleeping, and anorgasmia, and now sweating since I added prozac. Most of the side effects have ebbed and flowed, getting bad when a dose is increased, getting better after a couple of weeks. Each side effect has a different life expectancy (if you will), with the sleep problems lasting less than a week, the headaches about 10 days, etc. The sweating seems to be easing, after three weeks on the combo. The anorgasmia is worse, though... Oh, well, you can't have everything, right? (Not that I don't want it!)

Good luck to you. I love the Effexor because it is so close to side effect free for me, but everyone's chemistry is different. I hope you find something that works well for you.

Vivid antidepressant dreams aren't uncommon:

But those usually aren't nightmares. I think that if it's still happening after 3 months, it's probably going to continue. But there's no way to predict for sure. Good luck,

Bob

James here....

Like the doc said, it is common to have changes of some sort in dreaming activity on AD's. I just tend to remember my dreams now, more than b4 AD's.

When I was on effexor I didn't dream much at all. Now that I have gone off it I am having vivid dreams every night. I don't like to dream since I have to think when I'm awake and would prefer to not think when I'm asleep.

I have been on effexor for a while, and just added serzone (nefazodone). I was already having fairly vivid dreams, and now they are incrdibly vivid and narrative. Clear pictures and words, following a narrative sequence. Everything that occurs is congruent with the laws of nature, ie, no flying or morphing, etc. But, I am glad to be dreaming, because I also have sleep apnea, and before treatment with a CPAP, I had very little REM sleep at all.

James here....

If you don't dream regularly you become psychotic. Everyone dreams, every night they sleep, but many do not remember their dreams.
