Effexor Wellbutrin combination

Posted by Peter on July 9, 1999, at 20:36:06

My doc just started me on effexor xr 150 mg/day 2 weeks ago, so far I do feel just a tiny bit better. He also prescribed Wellbutrin SR 100 mg as a boost which I haven't started taking. Does anyone have experience with this combination? Apparently there is literature that says that these two drugs act synergistically. Any info would be most appreciated. Thanks! Peter

Wellbutrin is synergistic with a lot of drugs and is a common add-on. It rounds out the therapeutic scope by working on NE and dopamine, not much on serotonin. It is generally an activating drug, not sedating. It is known to cause weight loss in many people but also boosts sex drive. Of course, we're all different. Your mileage may vary. I tried it with Remeron, and each of the SSRIs in my travels, but it always causes severe tinnitus for me. That's too bad, because I liked the way it picked me up. Hope you like it and all goes well. By the way, it is also marketed as Zyban to quit smoking. In that situation 200mg (100 twice a day) is the starting dose. If 100mg helps, great. But there is plenty of upside potential if it doesn't. Like any antidepressant though, give it time to work. Two weeks isn't very long for any drug. Persistence should pay off. Wishing you the very best. JohnL.

Currently I'm on a combo of 200 mg. Wellbutrin SR twice a day and 75 mg. Effexor XR once a day. So far so good. No side effects as yet, but since I just added the Effexor I'm still not feeling up to par. The Wellbutrin was great for increasing my attention span and reading speed, but did not help with the depression. I have suicidal idealisation, crying spells, etc. I'd do anything to get to a state of comfort and contentment.

Hi PL,
My doc. recently added Wellbutrin to the 20mg. of Prozac I currently take. I haven't read of anyone else sharing my experience, but, each time I've tried Wellbutrin (3 times now), I've become profoundly depressed. This has gone away when I've discontinued the Wellbutrin. Just sharing my experience, and there's a post under Buproprion's Metabolism, on psych tips, which cites an article in Biol. Ther. in Psych. July 96 which cites other studies which have shown that Wellbutrin can decrease antidepressant response. I'd ask the doc to taper off the Wellbutrin and boost the Effexor and perhaps add pindolol. Wish you the best, Paul

Both Bupropion and Prozac block the CYP2D6 enzyme, I know because I've just been looking into this myself.

Apparently prozac does this significanty,so that almost there is almost no activity at that enzyme meaning raised levels of all the substrate drugs that are usually metabolised by it.

There isn't always a lot of data on it on drug interaction websites so its best to look up each drug specifically with CYP2D6 in the search engine.
