Provigil for fatigue/depression?

Posted by Peter on July 26, 1999, at 19:37:21

I am curious if anyone has had experience with Provigil (modafinil- used for narcolepsy) for the treatment of fatigue associated with the use of anti-depressants or with depression in general. I have always had problems with the SSRIs causing fatigue. Apparently Provigil works by a completely different mechanism from the amphetamines or ritalin and does not cause tolerance (which has been a real problem for me). Does it cause stimulation at all? The amphetamines definitely have an anti-depressant effect: are there any such effects with Provigil? Thanks for any info!

I am also very curious about this very thing, and I'm sort of surprised that there is so little published about this drug. (It has been marketed but is not listed in any 1999 PDR-type books I've seen.)

I don't have an answer to your question but would like to hear what you find out.

I've been on Provigil and Prozac for about 2weeks w/no benefit yet. This is my 2nd trial. The last time I had to come off the Provigil because it was causing anxiety. I have had similar probs. w/fatigue and SSRI's since '86 and have tried everything. The Provigil works well for a lot of people. It's really pricey $4 a pill, there's a french med. adrafinil that does much the same thing at a far lower price. You can try to "sneak" past the FDA and obtain it from a variety of overseas pharmacies. I didn't have any problem. A three month supply is supposedly legal, though I've read of med. seizures. I really wish they'd let us make our own health care choices. But anyway, that's my experience. Good luck. Paul
