celexa and superenergy

Posted by gail on July 27, 1999, at 8:20:19

I have been on Celexa for 2 1/2 months. For the last week I have been felling a bit of anxiety but more wired. I cleaned my house yesterday until 10 pm. The kids were in awe and I was racing. Is this normal or a different phase of Celexa?

Hi Gail...I am like Wonder Women on Celexa. I have an abundence of energy in that anxious way as well. It's worse after I have eaten a meal. This is my third week on it and I have lost about 6 pounds. And I am always hungry. Not sure thats going to be a good thing or not. You having any other side effects?

Take care
Wendy

Hi Wendy-

I have lost close to 10 lbs and I am thrilled with that side effect. I am a little edgy and not long on patience. This super power just started. Do you think it is just feeling normal again and this is part of what normal is? Been a long time since I've been this together. I am very pleased with Celexa. Orgasam's are hard to achieve and not as intense but the husband is willing to do what is necessary to help. I have had only 2 days of depression and both were the day I started my period. How about you?

I just started on Zoloft again and this happens
every time. I really enjoy it, but at some point
I start going too fast for my own good and stop
sleeping very much.

I recognize this as hypomania, especially when I
start buying lots of things I don't need and
get too social for my own good.

So be careful of this effect. You might end up needing
to take a mood stabiliser...

Sean.

Hypomania? Give me details, please. I just thought I was feeling "normal" for the first time in a very long time and had great energy. I'll tell you this though, I have felt so good on Celexa.

Well I'm not a doctor, so my concept of hypomania
is based on thinking about my own experiences
and talking with therapists. All the same, there
are a few key symptoms that seem to be common to
everybody.

The first thing is not sleeping. If you are getting
good sleep, it is hard to make a case for hypomania.
For me, I get to this point where I'm sleeping
2-3 hours/night. I've always backed off the meds after
about a week of this because I can tell I'm really
starting get wacky. Mind you, I'm having a total
blast, but objectively, I've been slowly getting
"out there". After a night or two of rest, I will
find that for whatever reason, I've purchased
dumb things that seemed important at the time.
One time I wound
up buying all these books on UFO's and aliens
and basically stayed up reading them for a few
days. I finally started fearing that I might be
abducted and told my girlfriend about this. But
she could tell that I had just wound myself up
into this rarified mental space and it was obvious
to her that something strange was going on.
I also seem to get really flirty with people.

But all of this is fun compared to stewing in a
the neurological morass of depression isn't it?
I do have a few days where I'm right
where I'd like to be: sleeping well, generally
happy, and focused on projects which have
substantial meaning to me. This seems like a
much more sustainable place to live from; yet it
happens to be almost impossible for my brain to
manage!

I guess this means that hypomania is not always
bad and what seems normal to one person might in
fact be hypomanic for another. If things happen
that damage healthy relationships or responsibilities,
it is possible that hypomania is happening. I
have found that sleep often "brings me down" and
lack of sleep cranks me up. From what I've read,
this is a classic atypical/bipolar pattern. At
the moment, I'm using sleep and benzos along with
pauses in AD therapy to manage my mood swings. It
isn't as good as lithium, but I feel better
overall.

Hope this helps you!

Sean.

I don't feel that the symptoms are hypomania for me. I just feel like I could kick butt all over the house. Nothing else described applies. I felt sluggish for the first 4-6 weeks on Celex and appreciate the new feelings. I take the 20mgs each morning around 8. I told my husband that I feel so whole for the first time in years. I don't feel blue or depressed and as a matter of fact I don't even think about being depressed. Now that is cool. I still get dry mouth occasionally but the nausea is gone. I love Celexa and what it has done for me. One negative-a good orgasm would be nice. Light ones but not the same.

Ha ha ha! I like it too. Zoloft has not failed to
produce it yet. Takes about 5-7 days to happen and
boy it sure feels good. What med did the trick for
you and at what dosage?

As for those pesky aliens, well they don't seem to
be very interested in me. Too bad, cause I have
some knee surgery that needs to happen. Maybe if
I pin a note to my pajamas before going to sleep
I will wake up with a fixed knee... COme to think
of it, maybe could give me a new limbic system
while they're at it...

Hi Gail..

Glad to hear your doing great! I hit a wall today. Woke up feeling like someone "pulled my plug". Has nothing to do with my period. I simply don't know what happened. I've lost most of my sexual interest and even more weight. I'm thinking about going back down to 10 mg from 20. I felt better at 10, although, I was only at that dose for a week. Keep me posted about how you are doing. Thanks for the reply!

>The very same thing happened ton me when I first
went on Effexor. Once the nausea subsided, I felt
fantastic!! I was motivated to do all the stuff
I was too bummed about before. Then about 6 months
later I tanked - no amount over the 225 mg I'd
achieved "Shangrila" with. The same thing happens with
Prozac (the infamous "poop-out") and others. I hope
you have better luck!

Wendy,

I felt much better on 10 mg's too! Alot less
foggy headed...10mg's also seemed to help better
for my depression than did 20...
