Need Remeron advice

Posted by Julep on July 13, 1999, at 16:34:15

I posted a while back re: Celexa and cravings for sweets.
I was diagnosed with ADD a month ago, and am taking Adderal 20mg TID - sorry, that's three times a day.
It's made a big difference!!
I had been taking Celexa 30 mgs daily, but have weaned down to 10 mgs daily(so far, so good, the sexual side effects are not as severe, but still craving sweets).
Today my Psych Doc prescribed Remeron 30 mgs daily(I'm to take 15 mgs, along with the 10 mgs of Celexa for a couple weeks and then stop the Celexa).
I need some info re: weight gain on Remeron(along with anything else that might be helpful).

Thanks for any help!!
"J"

Hi Julep. I tried Remeron for a couple months, and I still use it in little bits on an as-needed basis for sleep. I'm no expert, but I can share what I know about it.

I am skinny, 140lbs, and can eat whatever and as much as I want and never gain weight. Couldn't gain weight if I had to. But after two months on Remeron I actually gained 5lbs. I think I snacked more, bigger snacks, ate more at meals. Not sure. I was definitely hungrier. One of Remeron's side effects is weight gain, so if that is a problem then a diet-conscious lifestyle may be warranted.

Remeron is great for sleep. A mild hangover feeling in a.m. disappears with first coffee. Less sedating at higher doses. I'm not sure why you would want to stop the Celexa, you might find it works better with Remeron. Better than either alone. Some docs add Remeron to counter sexual side effects and insomnia.

There have been three clinical trials that showed Remeron to be faster acting and stronger than Prozac in early weeks of treatment, with similar effectiveness in later stages of treatment. It doesn't seem to affect sex one way or the other. My personal results were not as good as those clinical trials. It did help by putting a floor under me through which I couldn't plummet, and made me feel more sociable, but my lack of joy continued. So my hunt continues. I still like Remeron for great sleep.

Sometimes it is used for other purposes: To induce hunger in senior citizens who aren't eating. To counter anxiety. To relax before surgery. Many people have done quite well with Remeron, and I wish you well too. Hopefully this info will be of some help in gaining some orientation to your new prescription. Take care. JohnL.
