parnate to nardil

Posted by Sherry on July 1, 1999, at 10:46:57

Has anyone had a good response to nardil after taking Parnate? I have taken Parnate for about 6 months, and all of a sudden it lost its effectiveness. My pdoc tried raising the dose to no avail, so now he wants to try the Nardil. The Parnate is the only thing I have ever responded to, so my options are few.

Wishing everyone wellness,
Sherry

I have gone the other way: taken Nardil with good results until they disappeared and then later taken Parnate.

I like Parnate better because I have fewer weight gain issues and it doesn't make me as sleepy.

However, these are the only meds that have ever worked for me, so I would say you should try it. If it doesn't work the "Nardil weight" came off very fast for me, once I stopped taking it.

Also, could I ask what dosage you went up to on Parnate before deciding you needed to switch to something else? Did the AD effect just stop working or did the side effects become too much to handle?

Thanks,
Gretchen

I took 60 mg of the Parnate. I actually lost about 30 pounds while taking it, and I definitely do not want to regain the weight. However, I would rather be fat and happy than skinny and suicidal. The side effects from the Parnate were really not that bad. I was never sleepy, just a little tired while taking it.
How long have you been taking the Parnate after the Nardil stopped working. I am very afraid that the same thing will happen with the Nardil, and like I said before, my options are few.
Thanks so much for your response!
Sherry

Hi Sherry. In addition to Nardil, apparently Marplan is also available in the U.S. now (if that's where you are). It's similar to Nardil but rumor hath it, it doesn't cause the weight problem.

I had Nardil poop out on me too; it stopped working and I suffered rebound depression (i.e., withdrawal symptoms, because I had become tolerant; or at least, that's what my pshrink thinks it might have been) while still taking it. However, when I switched to Parnate later on, it worked pretty well (not as well as the Nardil had at first, though) and is still working, with the help of lithium.

I also know people who've taken Nardil for a decade or more and never had problems with "tolerance." It seems to be an uncommon (though not unheard of) reaction.

Hi,

Sherry,

The first time I took Parnate I took it for over two years generally playing with the dosage between 40-50mg.

I had taken Nardil for three separate trials before I ever took Parnate.

When I was taking the Nardil I would hit "a wall" where basically I felt that if I could increase the dosage I might continue to do well. (This had been done with countless other AD's, putting me on way over the recommended dose,) but both pdoc's involved over this time period insisted people did not "get used" to Nardil like they might another AD.

The Nardil trials only worked for months for me (between six to nine approx.)

_However_, if I had been able to increase the Nardil dose a bit (i.e. the usual Parnate dose is 30mg and it doesn't work for me at all until it is over 40mg,) the story might have been different.

So.. Elizabeth...

Might have a very good point in trying Marplan.

At least if you consider Nardil make sure your pdoc would support a higher than average dose, if things seem to be working out well, but just need some fine tuning.

Good Luck,
Gretchen
