New Archive System

Posted by Craig on June 29, 1999, at 1:16:27

If we're taking an opinion poll on this new archive system, mine is against this one. If you're doing this because the page gets too big, it would seem more logical to me to split the month in half so that there's June 1-15 on one page and June 16-30 on another. Even so, when threads are continued for weeks at a time the page is still going to get big. The old system does get to be a lot to sift through, but regular readers can follow the yellow "new" icons to keep track of what they haven't read yet. Or am I just being anal-retentive about this?

The problem with doing it by length of time, whether it's a month or it's two weeks, is that if the site gets busy enough, it'll be too long. That's why I think the answer is to do it by size instead.

I agree. I don't think the problem was so much having to sift through posts, but having to wait for the whole thing to download. I was getting impatient, and I have a pretty fast computer and modem. So I imagine it was even worse for other people.

Does it really make a difference whether archives cover different periods of time? I'm open to other opinions...
