What's a good Sleep Med?

Posted by jamie on June 27, 1999, at 5:06:11

Good question in a previous post on atypical/bipolar. I too wonder, what is a good sleep medicine for someone with insomnia waiting for a doctor appointment weeks away? I've only tried Ambien which did nothing for me. I did however find herbal teas of chamomile/paasionflower/hops/valerian somewhat helpful. But I had to drink enough that mid-night urination was a nuisance. Someone must know, what is a good sleep medicine, while temporarily off antidepressants, that won't require a wash-out period to get started on an MAOI or other antidepressant? Thank you. jamie

> Have you tried alcohol? Usually about 10 or so beers will put me right out. But you will run into the same problem you had with the tea. Constant urination! So drink up and enjoy yourself!

Jamie,

I know there's been some controversy about Xanax on this board lately, but it has always worked miraculously for me, AND I have taken it in conbination with MAOI's so that shouldn't be a problem for you.

Nardil (an MAOI) keeps me awake at night and awakens me too early in the morning. If I take 1 mg Xanax before bed, I go to sleep within a half hour and seem to sleep more restfully, even if I do awaken with the birds. There is no "hangover" whatsoever (for me) - it goes in and out quickly. I've taken Xanax in differing doses, depending on what side effects from what med, I was suffering at the time, and in no way have I ever become addicted to it. (Although you would have to fight me to get my bedtime 1 mg away from me!).

Maybe not for you, but just a suggestion. As usual, YMMV. (I'll be curious to see how you fare on MAOI's - they've been a life saver for me).

Judy

P.S. James - you sound like you have a hair across a certain part of your anatomy. Please don't let these "flamers" tick you off. Until this last one, your responses have been helpful and compassionate (you were the first person to respond to my very first post when I discovered this site a couple of months ago); and I can't tell you how much I respect what you do every day for a living. Please don't let a couple of ignoramuses get to you if that's what's happening.

Judy,
I don't know who you're talking about but that was the first post I've ever put on here. I think you have me confused w/someone else.
P.S. Sorry if I offended anyone I was just trying to liven things up I'll be good from now on.

My response was addressed to Jamie. The P.S. was in response to SaintJames's answer regarding alcohol as a "solution" to insomnia.

Do we have two SaintJames here now? That would be confusing.

Judy

James,

Apparently I've been duped. I should have known better when there was no "James Here" beginning the post.

Anyway, I'm relieved to know that the current events on this board haven't made *you* sarcastic enough to suggest tying one on to a legitimate insomnia question.

Sorry for the mistaken identity.

Judy

Do please be good, and careful about how you try to liven things up here. Thanks,
