Dosage

Posted by Michael Schell on November 3, 1998, at 9:51:24

I've recently started taking effexor xr to get the relief I need without the sexual side effects of prozac, luvox and paxil. I'm curious as to what dosage you found was best without getting the sexual side effects. I've only been on this drug for about a week after switching from prozac but so far no difference in the sexual side effects. I'm only taking 75mg effexor xr and have been told to take more to get rid of the sexual side effects. Some people believe you need to get the norepinephrine and dopamine effect of the drug in order to fight off the sexual side effects. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge or experience with getting the dosage right to fight off the sexual side effects and not have too many side effects overall. I'll be very grateful for any information you can give me to help me out. Thanks in advance!

Ihave also just begun Effexor. My bad side effect, it seems, is considerable anxiety and/or nervousness. Might a higher dosage help that? Seems counterintuitive. (I"m on 112.5 mg. Also on lithium 450 and pemoline 75 for potentiation and hyperomnia, not add or bipolar.) Thank anyone.

..The only thing that helped me was to add buspar to the effexor, we did this to help me sleep but I noticed that the sexual side effects went away at that time.

When my Zoloft ran out of steam and I was switched to Effexor, I noticed my sex drive and satisfaction level had returned after about a month, and I was just on Effexor (no additional drugs). I currently take Effexor XR 150 mg bid and Trazodone 300 mg hs. When the Trazodone was added, I noticed no difference in my sex drive whether I was taking the Trazodone or not.

I'm also having trouble with sleep and I've been helped a little by adding 25 to 50 mgs of trazadone 30 minutes before trying to sleep. How much BuSpar do you take, how often, and when do you take it. Does it really help you sleep better? How soon after you started to take it did it help your sexual side effects?

Uh.. well, um... ~laughing~ I had them, but they were just little blips on an otherwise previous "Off of the Richter Scale" sex life. And even achieving the "blips" was rare or took a much longer time if I just didn't give up or if I wasn't interested. My sex drive took a major beating while on the Prozac and, later, the Zoloft. I have a few "blips" still, but am able to hit the top or go off of the Richter scale again (I think monthly timing has a lot to do with intensity).

If this information helps someone, good. I don't know if age has anything to do with any of this, but I was on Prozac, Pamelor or Zoloft between the ages of 35-38. I've been on Effexor for about a year and a half and I've recently turned 40.

Now That was brave, Janey! My initial response to the sex question was "Sex? What sex?"

I've been taking 150 mg Effexor for 3 or 4 weeks now, and did notice a tremendous improvement in my depression, but not the anxiety. So I started with Buspar, 15 mg, then 30mg. I'm still having problems with general anxiety. I've not heard of Buspar for sleeping, but I found Trazodone to be a miracle cure for no sleep. I take between 50 and 100 mg of that, although I'm not sure if I'm supposed to play around with the dose on that.

One thing about the Effexor, is that I've noticed excessive fatigue throughout the day. Plus, I feel like lately I'm sliding back somewhat. I don't know what to make of all the differing opinions about all of these psychopharmaceuticals. It is evidently an art, and every doctor has preferences (My internist disagrees with my therapist who wonders about the psychiatrist. It truly makes me even more worried to think about it!)

I apologize to George for not having much of value to help you with the dosage/sex question.

I've got the "anorgasmia" from Effexor, but I've also noticed that my mind just won't "stick" with sexual thoughts ... it wanders. It's very strange, and it seems similar to how my mind won't
"stick" to my obsessive suicidal thoughts anymore (as much.) Does this make any sense?
Also, does anyone have any idea exactly WHAT causes the anorgasmia? I mean, is it something affected in the brain, or somewhere else? (Or am I asking too simple a question for such a complicated issue?)

Women, Efexor and Sexual Side Effects

I have been taking Efexor for about six months and Depakote for about a year now, and I have been noticing some pretty strange sexual side effects. Every time I orgasm, I lose control of my bladder and urinate. This is not female ejaculation, since it is clearly urine that is coming out. It is very embarrassing not to mention gross. I was wondering if anyone else has been having the same problems. If you do, please email me at medzgirl@yahoo.com.
