Dothep aka Thadin (dothiepin hydrochloride)

Posted by Caz on May 28, 1999, at 6:14:05

I have never heard of this drug and I haven't found much info online. I am supposed to try it because of adverse reactions to paxil and zoloft. Well I am hesitant to try because of how awful I felt when taking the other two. Also tried effexor and it was ok but made me too jittery (zoloft made me a nauseous zombie and paxil gave me such severe vertigo I couldn't stand up).

Treatment is for persistent anxiety and insomnia. I don't actually feel depressed but doctors keep prescribing me anti-depressants.

Anyone else used dothiepin?

yes i used it for 6 months, mildly helpful for mr, started low and went slow, very few side effects, much less than zoloft/ sertraline as we call it inengland and paxil /paroxetine, those 2 drove me wild very quickly
all the best

Thanks for responding Glen. I went back to my doc and told him about my concern and he asked me to try the slow release version of effexor, I did and it's been great! I guess the dosage level makes all the difference. I still can't sleep without a sedative but the anxiety is abating already and, strangely, the chronic back pain I've had for months has gone too, a good side effect I guess :)

Well Glen, no side effects to 75 mg Effexor XR except a possible hormonal one which I posted about seperatly :) I feel great and don't feel like I am taking anything at all. My mood has improved a lot but still feeling a little anxious - mostly if I wake at night (I have a weird form of anxiety that only affects me at night) and I take 1mg of Xanax if that happens.

best wishes
Caz

Tricyclics are not as likely as SSRIs to "poop-out" and stop working. However, as a layman, I would not be insistent that this cannot happen with dothiepin. I don't know of any antidepressant that is without the risk of depression break-through. Perhaps you simply need to increase the dosage. If this doesn't help, I would not worry. It does not sound like you are treatment-resistant, so I think you will be successful hunting for a new drug.

Have there been any psychological stresses recently that may account for medication break-through?

Good luck.

My Doctor just perscribed Dothep 25 to me, to help me sleep. I have an enlarged left ventricle in my heart, and I have to watch what I take (although I'm only 27), he said it was ok to use this drug. I've tried Zoloft before, that made me panic a little. Has anyone ever had any pulpitations on Dothep?

I have just been prescribed Dothiepin 25mg which I am supposed to take two of before I go to sleep. I am terrified of taking them because previously I took one 20mg of Cipramil just before I went to sleep and spent the entire night feeling the most ill I have ever felt. Sick, dizzy, hot and sweaty and not really in my own head. Because I was alone and it was night it made it worse. I never took them again.

What are the side effects of Dothiepin when taken for the first time? Should I make sure I have someone with me? Should I take them in the day for the first time?

When I had problems with Dothiepin I felt sick and dizzy and sort of numb inside my stomach. Nothing too scary happened though. I was always prescribed them to take at night as they were supposed to help me sleep. I found they actually seemed to keep me awake at first and then I would have difficulty getting up in the morning. I think it is probably best to take them as prescribed but see the doc and ask if you can start with a low dose and work up if you experience any problems.
