Sedation does improve, but not for a few weeks. Even then, you may feel rather sluggish and hungover when you wake up, goes away by the time you're done with first cup of coffee. Strange, but the higher the dose, the less sedation. At least in theory. I went as high as 60mg. Sedation was only a problem in late afternoon, early evening. Mornings and early afternoon were great. I tell you what though, you will have the best sleep of your life. Enjoy it, as that is not characteristic of so many of the other drugs. I eventually quit because it just didn't seem to help me much, but I sure miss that awesome sleep and go-get-em-tiger mornings. Condsider adding on Wellbutrin, perhaps around lunch time, for an extra pick-me-up, and to counter any weight gain, if that is a concern. That worked good, except Wellbutrin gave me a horrendous ringing in the ear. jamie

Check out this page: /cgi-bin/search.pl You will find a couple listings of doctor comments on Mirtazapine (remeron) as you check out all the topics. Just look for anything with Mirtazapine. The sedation issue is one of debate. It was interesting though to read that in Europe they routinely start at 60mg to bypass the whole sedation thing. Personally I found 30mg to be less sedating than 15mg. 45mg I couldn't decide. But for sure 7.5mg was way more sedating. I even cut a 7.5mg piece into smaller chunks and those tiny chunks were extremely sedating. Go figure. Doses up to 45mg to 60mg are safe, some go as high as 90mg. Just let your doctor know if you change your dose. Also, I know how hard it is, gotta be patient and wait weeks before making a decision one way or the other. How if affects you the first few days of a dosage change is not indicative of how you will feel in a couple weeks at that dose. Best to you, jamie.

I've been on Remeron for more than a year now, at 45mg, the highest dosage allowed here. When I first started, it hit me like a ton of bricks, in fact, my doctor suggested starting on a weekend, which I pretty much slept through. But that was wonderful as I hadn't slept for more than a few hours a night for months. I notice if I take it too late (after 8:30 or so), I have trouble waking up. It takes about an hour to kick in at night, but then I have trouble staying awake. I even get dizzy, wobbly on my feet, and my handwriting goes to hell so I can't do too much except go to bed. And I find having a glass of wine with dinner will add to this problem. Also, if I have to drive at night, I can't take it at a time when it will kick in before I turn the key. Too woozy. Things got worse in the winter and my doctor added lithium, which I loathed. Weight increased even more despite regular exercise, and I had to be very careful about any caffeine or I would get hand tremors. Plus I just felt bad -- more messed up -- having to take another medication twice a day. I'm off the lithium, but not feeling particularly great right now. Last Friday, for instance, I went into a pit and ended up constructing a really good suicide plan -- my best one yet. My concentration is vastly improved, which may be partly a function of the Remeron and partly because my circumstances are drastically less chaotic/catastrophic than they were a year ago. Sometimes I have trouble getting to sleep now, but nothing like before. I often wonder whether the Remeron is even working except that I know it puts me to sleep most nights, and I don't want to lose that. Zoloft and Effexor were horrendous. Good luck to you.

I took remeron last year. The first week at 15 mg was great. I was sleeping like I hadn't slept in 2 years. My mood imporved tremdously. The next week the doc said to double the dose. I could feel it working in my stomach as I layed in bed, like a mild diet pill. I was awaken most of the night. Then I broke out into a horrible rash all over my body. I really like what the drug did at the lower dose but had to stop due to sever rash all over my body. Has anyone else had an allergic reaction?
